This is waaaaaaaaay overdue. What needs to happen very soon, in the US, is harm minimization (or ‘harm reduction’). When I was a university freshman (over 25 years ago), all of my sociology professors were talking about this. Simply put, this would take all drug use out of the criminal paradigm and place it in its proper paradigm -> medicine/health.
