The idea that the war could end and people would stop dying is literally the worst nightmare of western liberals.
It’s either the war is won 100% in the way that the US wants or nobody is allowed to win at all.
It’s similar to one of the underlying messages in the (edit: NYT) story: either the western liberal/imperialist is given the seat at the head of the table or they’ll cry and cry so nobody else can enjoy the evening.
The Anglo-European empire is the spoiled brat of empires.
