Reddit Developer Platform aka Devvit is the thing Reddit is pushing to replace the JSON API, for bots, apps and other things.

Reddit, I have the feeling wants to put more effort into making it a user marketplace (Stop Talking To Each Other and Start Buying Things), so that they can get their cut.

That way can claim in their IPO they have more revenue streams other than cramming ads and shoving stupid pro features.

There is a good possibility it may be shut down as I just checked and confirmed they operate by JSON queries.

If Reddit goes the route of mandating paid access to 3rd party API keys by usage, services such as teddit could just convert to a paid service that either uses their key and is funded by users. If Reddit offers keys to users for free or a reasonable price, the interface could change to allow users to input their own key obtained from Reddit.

If all else fails (the API is restricted completely), give it a few months and I bet there will be at least one web scraping service for Reddit (in Piped fashion). That is Reddit is worth saving at that point.
