what’s the difference between kbin and lemmy? if i go here kbin isn’t on the list, so is kbin like it’s own thing? still kinda trying to figure this out lol
From what I understand, Kbin and Lemmy are two different projects.
They both use the same protocol (ActivityPub), so they can talk to each other.
The main difference is that Kbin also has what’s called “Microblogging”, which is what you know from Twitter for example.
They are essentially different software for, more or less, the same purpose: content aggregation with similar features to Reddit. Kbin also has microblogging features (Lemmy doesn’t). They both use the same protocol ActivityPub so they can see and talk to each other.
Yeah, kbin is it’s own thing! Similar but it’s own take on the fediverse. :)

kbin is a bit broader than Lemmy since they have both the threaded style discussions like Lemmy with both their own magazines and Lemmys communities (they both work the sam way) but they also include toots from Mastodon as well as Microblogs.
Also, kbin and lemmy interoperate with eachother, as does mastodon (although mastodon does it much worse), to clarify.
You don’t need to care whether you use lemmy or kbin except in deciding which UI you prefer, essentially.

One of the key differences is that, while Lemmy solely thread conversation/discussion platform, Kbin is also a microblogging platform (like Mastodon, Pleroma, Misskey, GoToSocial, etc).
Kbin also integrates better with mobilizon, the event planner federated platform.
