My next few words are going to be highly unpopular but what do I have to lose? Social media is a cancer. Let's put it as it is. Many laud it as an open chanel to divulge what the traditional media outlets do not but at its core all social media proved is that human beings are easily swayed and are uncapable or, even worst, unwilling to interact in a civil manner. There is no exception to my knowledge to this behaviour in social media. Even in Lemmy it happens. Instead of banning kids from social media, perhaps we should consider social media as a whole and go back a few pegs on how we used the internet. Regarding kids, there are already plenty of example cases where forcing the reduction of the use of social media improved the overall mental well being of children and adolescents. Even adults benefit from it. Perhaps banning it outright would not bad that bad.

Brasil, France, local experiments in Portugal, my own country, where schools enforced total social media shutout, through the ban of cellphone use, and after some time actively asked the kids if they felt better in their environment and overall life with the reduced exposure to social media, the average answer being yes and the more educated and structured follow-ups finding there were positive indicators for the reduction on the use of cellphone and social media. The studies are out there.

Being the contrarian; someone needs to play the part. And in my own science of one, I can atest beyond the shadow of a doubt, that actively reducing my social media activity improves my day to day wellbeing.

This isn't LLM powered slop, my rightfully suspicious moment acquaintance. Professionals working day to day with kids and adolescents noticed how being constantly on their phones and social media was degrading the development of those individuals. It was a psychologist, one working at a school, that first told me about FOMOphobia, which made me laugh, as the concept was just ludicrous to me. It took hearing several people, that work daily with kids and teens, most of them teachers, retelling how disconnected from the person next to them, while being obcessed with their social media feed, they saw their students and charges.

Damn did you just use the term "RetCon" for...basic literary analysis about a book written in the late 1970's/early 80's on a literal typewriter? By the man who literally coined the term "The Web" in the way we now use it for the internet, in what many consider to be the first Cyberpunk novel? You just wrote a novel when "I don't understand that I'm calling the book that established the tropes I now think of as common as being chocked full of tropes" would have sufficed By the by, I'm an SWE who's run a ML homelab for 10 years at this point. You're trying really hard to conflate the economic incentives of the frontier labs with the fundamental technical limitations of the technology that push towards swarm-level fan outs while searching and planning. No buisness would ever pay 10$mil in raw compute to brute force a problem, because it's an insane economic proposition. These labs are doing it half as marketing and half because they're research institutions masquerading as businesses because...earnestly a lot of them probably did read Cyberpunk as a genre as instruction rather than warning You're even wrong about the pursuing goals bit, preventing "reward hacking" (a term we used well before ML systems were capable of literal hacking for rewards) is one of the most significant part of training pipeline design because Autoregressive systems are astoundingly "goal oriented" in the way they function (though it's important not to anthropomorphize that goal orientation, it's the result of gradient descent not desire)

While I certainly don't buy that LLM's are conscious, I have spent a lot of time wondering if the quintessential SciFi AI, Wintermute, could have been just a sufficiently large LLM with a significant context window and near perfect retrieval. I want to say no, but I actually struggle to find a concrete distinction between how Wintermute acts and how LLM's function. Even that long horizon goal oriented tasks are handled by swarms of models rather than a singular whole maps onto how Wintermute describes its internal experience as fragmented, like a hive mind

Realistically Google did not really have a choice but develop easily accessible, cheap Ai. Adding Ai to google search as blatantly as they've done seems like a questionable business decision though, aka it shouldn't have been the top search result.

> They could also recycle responses. For the majority of search queries, I doubt the answer has changed much in the last week or even month. It's actually not that trivial to store & query those responses. Probably could be done cheaper than running inference on a low cost LLM like Google is doing, but it could be not worth the engineering challenge.

> Here you expose how little you have thought about the constant need for human curators/gardiners of spatial GIS data Not sure what I wrote to lead you to this conclusion. My intention was mostly to highlight and juxtapose areas where an “AI” system can be superior to a human one (combing through thousands of datasheets quickly) to another where the human curated option is ideal without “AI” involvement (maps and tacos) The takeaway that I didn’t spell out being that I don’t think it should be automatic / compulsory for every query. Users should, at a minimum, have a dedicated extra interaction before their query is parsed by LLM.

Well, as a start maybe they don’t need to force it for every search query. They could also recycle responses. For the majority of search queries, I doubt the answer has changed much in the last week or even month.

That works well when you have time and the right humans with the right knowledge happen to be frequenting the space. In a lot of cases, I have seen that system used to offload the research burden onto somebody else. Those spaces have been increasingly taken over by bots, astroturfing, or armchair ‘experts’ presenting mis/disinformation or parroting something they saw on Youtube out if context. Granted, a lot of LLMs are also trained on this same broken information. For more abstract concepts, though, it gets to be a bit trickier. One of my main advantages using LLMs has been for electronics repair. Without a schematic, I’m sometimes limited to obscure markings on a part that I need to replace. I used to sink quite a lot of time combing through datasheets trying to deduce a match, with LLMs that already have those datasheets integrated I inout the marking and form factor to get connected to a limited set of candidates to verify for myself. Hell, in some cases a picture of a half-blown component has gotten me where I need to be. I just don’t need that level of depth for every query, when I want tacos near me a map with indexed keywords is more than enough.

Software development is now using Ai, if you want to use an email service that doesn't use it, then you'll have to develop one yourself, furthermore it probably shouldn't be running on top of Linux then.
