Removed Comment Its an interesting form of debate where someone says, hey no bringing up X. Anyway it is hard to debate given your argument has to do with something that has limited supply. I mean if the people who owned property that could be rented don't then supply will even be more limited. It should not be. Im not sure why you would be looking specifically for nice landlords to come for first. Would they be heroes if they had property that could be rented out but did not rent it out so that they were not landlords? I personally would go for the corporate ones first and not at all for ones that live in the same place they rent. Here is the thing. I have had decent rental experiences and horrible ones and there is a general trend I see. Renting a unit in a flat where the owner lived in the flat and owned no other real estate. Every time it was wonderful. They will interview you more and have greater rights to kick you out, but they are more concerned with having a good neighbor and not losing money than with making massive profit. They will follow market rates somewhat but much more caustiously and if you are a good tenet they will not want to encourage you to leave as its a pain for them to find someone new who could be horrible. In addition they lived there and kept the place nice enough for them to live there. Now what I found is the more an individual or entity is in the rental biz the worse it gets. I have been in flats where someone owned several properties and did not live in the one I was in. Since they did not live there they were way less concerned about the property being a good living experience. They also were less concerned with turnover and more with profit. Just not wanting someone who destroyed the place and payed on time. Move up to apartment buildings and corporate landlords and profit is all they are concerned with. Every year the rent will go up till you leave and they won't do anything not legally mandated and you may have to get government offices to help you or outright sue to get that to happen. This is not unique to rental businesses. I actually recently came across this video about late covid on a restaurant that was closing. They guy said he could not find anyone to work. Here is the thing. He specifically could not find anyone to manage the restaurant and even mentioned all the kids that depended on it for a part time job. He also owned a catering biz which I assume had a hired manager. So basically even though it looks like a mom and pop shop he was just some guy who bought them up. To feed people you need actual beans not shares in server farms or mega yachts . Selling shares in server farms does not automatically increase the yield of bean farms - or even switch livestock pasture into arable. Even the mega yachts would need a serious refit to become workable fishing vessels - probably not sustainable for 216 years though. You could probably end "AI" poverty or something else pointless like that. The idea of taxing the rich is more about being able to convince normal people to spend more time doing useful stuff (like public service) instead of billionaire service. The $ values are next to meaningless for measuring that. I'd prefer to measure human hours (+land + other basic resources) spent serving luxuries to billionaires - on a current time basis. Removed Comment I think the biggest problem with these kind of calculations is that you can't just take money from someone, regardless of your opinion of them or how they obtained so much wealth. After all, that would mean that the government/whoever's in power could just as quickly take your money too. Assuming you want an equal society. Secondly, a lot of rich people's wealth is in investments, not cash, so you can't just take it and spend it. Sell all of those shares overnight, or even steadily? Bye bye global economy. Not to mention, who are you selling them to? (As I note Lurch has said similarly as I write this!) So you really need to work these figures out from the view of how much they could be taxed in the future without loosing their billionaire status. I'm sure I've seen someone do something similar, but I can't find it at the moment. A quick search found these articles https://www.ft.com/content/f0eee3a9-52b1-4edb-bc1c-b0155735ece5 Which say "The EU Tax Observatory estimates that a 2 per cent, EU-wide wealth tax would raise $42bn a year from the bloc’s 499 billionaires." And https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-67191791 Which says "It suggested a minimum 2% tax rate on billionaires' global wealth would raise $250bn (£205bn) a year." So then it's a case of what can you do with that much per year?
