I’ve seen a lot of posts about how to watch new and old movies and shows for free. This is for you, guys!
Stremio and Cloudstream offer cord-cutters a way to stream movies, TV shows, and web series for free, they do so by aggregating pirated content, making them alternatives to mainstream paid streaming services.
You can get all your entertainment in one place, like Netflix.
Arotrios ( @Arotrios@kbin.social ) 21•2 years agoAdditional resources that do the same thing:
Super simple web based: https://movie-web.app
Less simple, but good for finding something to watch: https://goku.sx
Not simple at all, but can torrent and stream: https://github.com/popcorn-official/popcorn-desktop (scroll down for installation)
ehyuman ( @ehyuman@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 5•2 years agothank you.
Arotrios ( @Arotrios@kbin.social ) 3•2 years agoHoly shit that’s awesome - bookmarked. Thanks!
nullishcat ( @nullishcat@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 3•2 years agoNo problem :) Trust me, if you look around more on the wiki, you WILL find something that you’d like.
Slayer 🦊 ( @MavTheHack@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 12•2 years agoI don’t recommend the linked strategy
I suggest looking into the *arr stack and jellyfin
Then if you’re on android use nzb360 and you got yourself the holy grail of netflix alternatives
sylverstream ( @sylverstream@lemmy.nz ) 3•2 years agoI’ve got the *rr setup, and it works great. My main concern is that you need to download/add shows/movies first before you can watch them. Plus, it requires a bunch of storage if you want to maintain a large collection. We watch movies/shows infrequently so it’s not worth for my to have many TBs of data. An on-demand interface would suit us better I think.
Ganbat ( @Ganbat@lemmyonline.com ) 1•2 years agoI’ve been trying to do this, but struggling with figuring out how to get it all set up. I haven’t even managed to get the docker container set up.
Portly053 ( @portly053@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 10•2 years agoStremio with real debrid is awesome
code_is_speech ( @code_is_speech@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 6•2 years agoDebrid is scummy, it hit and runs torrents without seeding. It makes torrenting worse for everybody. Only 1 debrid service I know of seeds, and it only does it for 72 hours.
This is yet another reason why public trackers are getting worse and worse.
Torrenting only works if people seed after downloading. Please consider getting a VPN with port forwarding (I use proton), and seed your torrents. (Depending on your country you probably don’t even need a VPN, but it’s wise to use one anyway).
If you want to direct download, consider a seedbox instead. There are probably good options for streaming directly from your seedbox too, but I haven’t investigated.
nullishcat ( @nullishcat@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 2•2 years agoIt’s 100% possible, plex and jellyfin are available on swizzin. Most aren’t good enough to do transcoding, though, so keep that in mind if you don’t have a good internet.
FermatsLastAccount ( @FermatsLastAccount@kbin.social ) 4•2 years agoThat’s what I use, but this post is about free alternatives.
jeanofthedead ( @jeanofthedead@kbin.social ) 3•2 years ago100%. Or Syncler, if you prefer. I love both apps.
nieceandtows ( @nieceandtows@programming.dev ) 2•2 years agoDo I need to pay for real debrid? I’m using torrentio and it’s sufficient. How’s realdebrid different?
Portly053 ( @portly053@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 4•2 years agoYes it costs money but not much. You get better speeds and don’t need a vpn for debrid serivces
Yaks ( @Yaks@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 2•2 years agoYou do pay for it but at €13 for 6 months it is totally worth it. Good and reliable solid streams to give you the most applike experience.
nieceandtows ( @nieceandtows@programming.dev ) 1•2 years agoThat sounds reasonable. How does it compare to having your own homeserver? I already have a small home server. Does it allow you to download movies to add to your own collection?
FermatsLastAccount ( @FermatsLastAccount@kbin.social ) 1•2 years agoI switched to it from hosting my own server. In my experience, Stream quality/lag is way better with Debrid services.
It’s also much faster to go from “I want to watch this show” to actually watching the show with Debrid than it was with my Plex/Jellyfin server, even with all the *rrs setup.
nieceandtows ( @nieceandtows@programming.dev ) 1•2 years agoThanks. What’s rrs setup?
ehyuman ( @ehyuman@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 3•2 years agosonarr prowlarr etc. those softwares
nieceandtows ( @nieceandtows@programming.dev ) 1•2 years agoAh got it, thanks!
sylverstream ( @sylverstream@lemmy.nz ) 1•2 years agoWould that work on kodi/osmc? I only have a Vero 4k and a dumb chromecast, so can’t install Android apps.
Yaks ( @Yaks@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 1•2 years agoIf you use Kodi. The best add on to use with real debrid is Seren in my opinion.
sylverstream ( @sylverstream@lemmy.nz ) 1•2 years agoThanks that looks cool!
I have got it working now with Stremio and Yatse. In Stremio I select External Player, then Play on Media from Yatse and it shows on the Kodi.
ScrewTheHole ( @ScrewTheHole@kbin.social ) 4•2 years agoWhere I need help is on the hardware side. I have a good smart tv and young kids. What do I use to run this setup that has a simple remote control for the ui?
tarius ( @tarius@lemmy.ml ) 1•2 years agoIf you have android tv, you can use Stremio
fsniper ( @fsniper@kbin.social ) 3•2 years agoput.io is another option. You provide links, it downloads and streams it for you. I haven’t been using this for a long long while but it was really really good. With deduplication fibrils it has, most of the content would be already downloaded for you.
sampeng1 ( @sampeng1@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 2•2 years agoDo I need to have a vpn to watch this?
Not mandatory, although for safety measures.
sylverstream ( @sylverstream@lemmy.nz ) 1•2 years agoI’ve got a Vero 4K which is osmc based, would it work on this as well? Right now I’m downloading everything with sonarr etc.
