Much more thorough article from WaPo (gift link)

I think the important takeaway here is that he’s not the person to fight the MAGA-wing, but he wants to fight it.

Good to hear he’s discouraging Manchin’s “No Labels” run, but we’ll see if anyone can change Manchin’s mind

  • Mitt Romney earned some respect in my eyes.

The man was the worst of the worst in business, he pretty much popularized Vulture Capitalism with Bain Capital.

And while he was a GOP politician expressing plenty of political positions I don’t agree with, setup social healthcare in his state, was the only one to vote to Impeach Trump and before J6, he messaged Mitch McConnel telling him he was concerned with what he heard the far right element was planning for J6 on social media and hoped that Mitch was doing something about it, BECAUSE HE WAS CONCERNED TRUMP WOULDN’T AND WOULD INSTEAD SPUR THEM ON.

While his politics weren’t my thing, he did do his best to stand on the side of good and decent, in a party where those are entirely alien concepts.

Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney announced Wednesday that he will not run for reelection to the Senate and called for a “new generation of leaders” as he criticized both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.

In a video message, Romney outlined a range of what he described as critical issues, including rising national debt and the climate crisis, and said “neither President Biden nor former President Trump are leading their party to confront those issues.”

Romney has long been a rare member of the Republican party who has been an outspoken critic of Trump.

At a time when the age of prominent politicians on both sides of the aisle has come under increasing scrutiny, Romney also emphasized the need for a new generation of leadership.

“While I’m not running for re-election, I’m not retiring from the fight,” Romney said, after criticizing both President Biden and former President Trump for failing to provide solutions to issues like the national debt and global warming.

“I’ll be your United States Senator until January of 2025.”
