On one hand, “carbon footprint” was made up by oil companies to shift the blame. On the other, commons management benefits from collaboration and social pressure. This community exists to facilitate that type of collaboration and positive social pressure.

This is a place to…

highlight inspiring stories of people reducing their climate impact
brag about our own sustainability goals and our successes
highlight other communities, software, organizations with overlapping or closely related goals
share ideas about how to coordinate to reduce our climate impact

We are all aware, or at least we all should be aware, that the majority of carbon comes from the military industrial complex and giant corporations. That shouldn’t stop any of us from taking our own steps to reduce our impact. This can be directly by cycling instead of driving, eating less or no meat, or finding other ways to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. It can also be indirectly, by boycotting carbon intensive products and companies, or carrying out direct action to shut down carbon intensive practices.

We should talk about all of these things. This is a place to organize (legal) actions to reduce our own carbon impact. To keep things focused, some things will be removed.

This is not a place to…

plan or promote illegal activities
share memes (there are plenty of climate meme communities)
talk about how corporations/governments are the real problem (we know, that’s not helpful here, there are other climate action communities for that)
post climate updates (there are other communities for that)
engage in climate doomerism

Posts are expected to be primarily in English, but posts to other language communities doing the same thing are welcome. Please include English descriptions so other communities can be linked in the side bar.

This community is inspired by the Elinor Ostrom quote highlighted on the banner: “I would rather address the question of how to enhance the capabilities of those involved to change the constraining rules of the game that lead to outcomes other than remorseless tragedies.”

The icon is of Vietnamese bicycle military logistics during the US-Vietnam war.

SLRPNK

Solarpunk imagines a world in which today’s existential threat - the climate crisis - is being approached with camaraderie and adaptive ingenuity.

What is Solarpunk?

A SolarPunk Manifesto

Basic Rules:

be constructive: there is no need of another internet space full of competition, negativity, rage etc.;
no bigotry, including racism, sexism, ableism, transphobia, homophobia or xenophobia;
be empathic: empathy is more rebellious than a middle finger;
no porn and no gore: let’s keep this place easy to manage;
no ads / spamming / flooding, we don’t want to buy/consume your commodified ideas;
occasional self-promotion by active members is fine.
