Gàidhlig, or Scots Gaelic, is an indigenous[1] endangered[2] language of Celtic origin. Primarily spoken in Scotland, it can however be heard around the world.

There has been a push to preserve and revive this language over the last decade or so. DuoLingo was a popular means of learning the language because it was one of the few online tools which offered it. However DuoLingo has gone down the route of severe enshittification. DuoLingo (in my eyes) was a bad means of learning anyway as there was no community, no actual humans to speak to. Something this community aims to remedy.

This community aims to restore optimism and encourage rebellion. Optimism that that which was almost destroyed can return. Rebellion, counterculture and decolonialism. A rejection of the cultural dominance of the British Empire and near eradication of alternative language.

The icon image is taken from Solarpunk Ireland and given a Scottish twist.

’S e cànan dùthchasach[1] ann an cunnart[2] a th’ ann an Gàidhlig, no Gàidhlig na h-Alba, de thùs Ceilteach. Air a bruidhinn sa mhòr-chuid ann an Alba, ach faodar a cluinntinn air feadh an t-saoghail.

Tha oidhirp air a bhith ann gus a’ chànan seo a ghleidheadh agus ath-bheothachadh thar nan deich bliadhna a dh’fhalbh no mar sin. Bha DuoLingo na dhòigh mòr-chòrdte air a’ chànan ionnsachadh oir b’ e seo aon de na beagan innealan air-loidhne a bha ga thabhann. Ach, tha DuoLingo air a dhol sìos slighe an t-slighe gu bhith air a dhèanamh nas miosa. Bha DuoLingo (nam bheachd-sa) na dhroch dhòigh air ionnsachadh co-dhiù oir cha robh coimhearsnachd ann, gun fhìor dhaoine ann airson bruidhinn riutha. Rud a tha an coimhearsnachd seo ag amas air a leigheas.

Tha an coimhearsnachd seo ag amas air dòchas ath-nuadhachadh agus ar-a-mach a bhrosnachadh. Dòchas gum faod na chaidh a sgrios cha mhòr tilleadh. Ar-a-mach, frith-chultar agus dì-choloinidheachd. Diùltadh ceannas cultarail Ìmpireachd Bhreatainn agus cha mhòr cuir às do chànan eile.

SLRPNK

Solarpunk imagines a world in which today’s existential threat - the climate crisis - is being approached with camaraderie and adaptive ingenuity.

What is Solarpunk?

A SolarPunk Manifesto

Basic Rules:

be constructive: there is no need of another internet space full of competition, negativity, rage etc.;
no bigotry, including racism, sexism, ableism, transphobia, homophobia or xenophobia;
be empathic: empathy is more rebellious than a middle finger;
no porn and no gore: let’s keep this place easy to manage;
no ads / spamming / flooding, we don’t want to buy/consume your commodified ideas;
occasional self-promotion by active members is fine.
