With more people joining Lemmy and other decentralised networks there is a growing shift to the common misogyny and sexism we find on other social media networks (YouTube, Reddit, etc.).

I think it’s pretty obvious that the reason is that there are even less women here than other places online. What are your ideas on how to change that? Or do you feel it is a lost cause?

    Don’t forget the aggravating factors.

First of which is the fact that fedi apps were primarily populated until recently by FOSS techies. Like many aspects of tech, this sector has had sexism problems. While there have been improvements in this sector, expecting everyone to have gotten the memo is… unrealistic

Second is the sexists that get banned from Reddit and Meta platforms looking for a new platform. While many end up on the likes of Truth Social or other right wing platforms, some end up on fedi platforms.

Third, it is really easy to create instances for all sorts of depravity. The KKK and NAMBLA can have their own instances, as can Andrew Tate (when he gets out of prison, I mean). Unfortunately, right now Lemmy doesn’t provide the means to block other instances for users, and unless your instance admins defederate from a problem instance, you can’t stop that instance from coming up on your feed.
