Image source Which is why you also shouldn’t write onto CDs with permanent markers. DVDs on the other hand have a relatively thick plastic layer on top, offering fairly good protection. The damage was done from label side, however with CDs there’s just a thin lacquer layer below the label and that’s it.

Which is why you also shouldn’t write onto CDs with permanent markers.
