One of the world's most common artificial sweeteners is set to be declared a possible carcinogen next month by a leading global health body, according to two sources with knowledge of the process, pitting it against the food industry and regulators.

I don’t have time to research it right now, but “International Council of Beverages Associations” sounds like an industry lobbying group to me, not a scientific organization. But like I said, I don’t have time to dig into them right now (at work) so be skeptical of my skepticism!

Moreover, it’s a very good point that it’s a bad system when it only delineates what confidence there is that a compound can cause cancer, and not how strong the effect is. Lots of things are technically carcinogenic, but with the effect being so weak it’s negligible. Technically we already know formaldehyde is a metabolite of aspartame, and that formaldehyde is carcinogenic, but the amounts involved mean it’s going to be a very minor contributor to cancer risk.
