The proposals are the government's latest bid to tackle illegal immigration, with the new ID being a form of proof of a citizen's right to live and work in the UK.

The new digital ID will be held on people’s phones

It’d be wise to separate digital IDs from expensive tracking devices (smartphones).

What’s wrong with an actual card with a chip (but no wireless capability) on it?

In Germany, this is done via NFC on the chip card, using your phone. Works fine and I get to control when ID is used.

Yeah, the poster above said “no wireless capability” though. NFC is wireless.

And even without that, I prefer a single short range wireless connectivity to a multiband device with very high processing power and multiple sensors and various attack vectors having all my effects consolidated in it.

Agreed. A passive RFID chip, that require an external signal to power itself, is better than a mobile app.
