Let’s say this is true. Court proceedings will start how soon after? What does it look like if he’s the nominee and gets found guilty and sentenced. Would that mean the GOP would have no presidential candidate and the Dems win by default or would the person Trump selected as VP take up the mantle and would be the new nominee?
In theory, it changes nothing. There is no law against running for president from prison. In fact, Eugene Debs did this in the 1920 election, and got 3% of the vote.
In practice, if Trump were sentenced to prison before the election then the GOP would probably find a way to replace him with another candidate, just like when candidates die before election day.
