The danger here is that Putin too is under increasing pressure to escalate for the recent western escalations. Right now the drone technology is at a point where nobody can defend against it - neither Russia nor Europe. Russia could strike at UK or German weapon manufacturers that supply Ukraine. Or critical energy infrastructure in the coming winter. Or just shit that is really expensive like the stuff they blew up in Russia.
I fear it will take something like that to make the Europeans understand that Russia is simply not a pushover and that privatized military industrial complex simply can't win a war against state owned weapon manufacturing and a determine nationalist population.
And all it would have taken to prevent this war would have been to say "Ukraine will not join Nato and should remain neutral". Instead the US and EU sabotaged every potential peace agreement. I don't think that they were under the illusion that it would be quick. Otherwise they could have done it a year or more earlier with the intention to end it before the Olympics.
Ukraine had defence structures. Russia must have known them before the war and seen them growing year over year.
It's a special military operation because it mirrors the US and their non-wars. It exposes the double-standards of the west to the rest of the world.
The real problem is that if Russia is reasonable then we have the risk that we are not building a deterrence but the capabilities to fight against Russia and China to cement western hegimony. That would be good for us if it wouldn't allow the elite to finally cut down all social support for the average population.
