If this is the future of automobiles then I’m going to go to mad max levels of psychotic to keep my old dumb car running.

Can you elaborate? What about a smart car is so repugnant?

The biggest thing I hate is that it is impossible to fix. A software bug can brick your infotainment system, and there’s no way to swap it out with a new one without extensive reverse engineering.
I’d be fine with smart cars if they were legally required to publish all of the APIs and interfaces so that after market infotainment can exist. Basically we need a standard like OBD, but for the car’s control system that the infotainment plugs in to.
Like imagine if the 2038 bug bricks your head unit. Your car, that still runs, is now basically unusable due to how reliant the car was on that screen. You can drive it, but now you won’t even be able to change the temperature, and there’s no aftermarket to fix it with.
Closed source smart vehicles basically turn your 3,000lb chunk of material into a disposable commodity.

i hope people blame EVs for the eventual problems this and similar shenanigans will cause and we just stop using cars altogether.

Is TechCrunch owned by TenCent now or something?
Not Tencent, but ever since Verizon sold it to Apollo in 2021 the quality of the content started going down.
