did this once rn and just noticed how pricey it can get outside the us, heres hoping it gets better by the time i need a new computer.
i think the last thing the framework needs to be a true killer is 3rd party adoption of their standards, like aibs and such. is this too much of a pipe dream?
- helenslunch ( @helenslunch@feddit.nl ) 11•9 months ago
It’s pricey inside the US also.
My laptop actually just died yesterday. But if I wanted one of these I’d be paying out the ass and going without a laptop for several months.

I don’t believe in pre-ordering, so I bought a framework from the ships immediately pile. I was in your situation, my last laptop had died and i needed a new one. I just speced out “good enough”, and ordered. I’m still quite happy with my framework 13.
- helenslunch ( @helenslunch@feddit.nl ) 3•9 months ago
Gonna see if I can’t get mine fixed first. If not I’ll have to bite the >$1k bullet.
- jet ( @jet@hackertalks.com ) English1•9 months ago
The framework 13 is shipping today, you can buy the base configuration for 850 USD and then upgrade later. just a option
- helenslunch ( @helenslunch@feddit.nl ) 2•9 months ago
It’s literally not usable in the $850 config
- SteveTech ( @SteveTech@programming.dev ) English2•9 months ago
Also apart from the expansion cards, the ram and SSD are quite cheaper to get elsewhere, especially if you can reuse your old laptop’s. So it’s still possible to get a sub 1k config.
- helenslunch ( @helenslunch@feddit.nl ) 2•9 months ago
My old laptop is DDR4. I Guess I can reuse the SSD so that’ll save me $50…
Get one second hand

It’s already pretty hard to get new. I doubt I would be able to find one used where I live. But then again I hope this pricing/availability issue is solved soon.
- atocci ( @atocci@kbin.social ) 11•9 months ago
Haha you’ve got me there, I’ve done it maybe 3 times now. I keep saying it’s definitely going to be my next laptop, but I can’t justify it quite yet.
- Saik0 ( @Saik0Shinigami@lemmy.saik0.com ) English2•9 months ago
I CAN justify it… But still myself needing something that they don’t just offer which takes them out of the running unfortunately. And yes, I load up the DIY tool just to make sure it’s not there yet every time someone in my house needs a new laptop.

Too many times to admit. I even had a order in but cancelled. I just can’t excuse myself that kind of money.
And I’m a freelance IT dude!

Probably a dozen times before I pulled the trigger.

Twice - One time to get a quote, the second time for the actual order when i was ready.

Coolest non-Apple laptop on the market. Want to buy, but it’d get no use after the first week. Jealous of Linux users who get to justify these.
- toastal ( @toastal@lemmy.ml ) 2•9 months ago
I’ll check once a year to see if they finally added a decent OLED display option with 100% DCI-P3 coverage. Since that has never come true, I never bothered going any further.
Are there any good OLED laptops on the market? I just checked the Framework forums and it looks like people are hacking OLED displays into their existing laptops but yea, that’s definitely not for me
- toastal ( @toastal@lemmy.ml ) English1•8 months ago
Lots of them actually. It’s not that niche anymore. In my experience, ASUS generally has the nicest ones… & they offer OLED on even midrange laptops (good marketing idea IMO since it’s gonna look nice in a show room & it’s just looks nice so it feels nicer). The BIOS upgrades with them has always been safe & easy, but their Linux support is just mid (they don’t go out of their way to help support or anything).

About 5 times before I finally ordered
- asexualchangeling ( @asexualchangeling@lemmy.ml ) 1•9 months ago
About 5 times, first to order and the rest to obsess
