They keep this 20+ year old laptop around because it has a serial port and every now and then that comes in handy.
You can’t really see it in the picture but the laptop is pretty thick and heavy.
Rexelpitlum ( @Rexelpitlum@discuss.tchncs.de ) 6•5 months agoI still have my old Lenovo X61T which is nearly as old. With maxed out RAM (4GB) and an SSD it is actually still quite usable (running Linux). I love its great keyboard, that’s the reason I kept it. At some time my kids discovered that it is still able to run Minetest at reduced settings and so it now is part of the occasional LAN-Party when friends are over. Opens my heart to see the old buddy right in the middle of action being used by a bunch of kids that are only slightly over half its age!
MiddledAgedGuy ( @MiddledAgedGuy@beehaw.org ) 4•5 months agoFor some reason otherwise obsolete setups that live on for a specific purpose please me. But also you can get a USB to serial device on the cheap.
Edit: Just noticed the community this is in. So I guess… live on niche XP laptop!
moonsnotreal ( @moonsnotreal@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) 3•5 months agoI love xp. I wish that windows just kept the same look and overall style but with security updates.
MajorHavoc ( @MajorHavoc@programming.dev ) 4•5 months agoMakes me think…Shouldn’t there be a Linux theme to accomplish that?
Oh yeah! https://lunduke.substack.com/p/make-linux-look-exactly-like-windows-210
moonsnotreal ( @moonsnotreal@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) 4•5 months agoThank you for the link! I know what I’m gonna do for the next hour or so
MajorHavoc ( @MajorHavoc@programming.dev ) 1•5 months agoYeah. This is going to be me weekend.
phx ( @phx@lemmy.ca ) 2•5 months agoWhy not just use a USB-TTY adaptor?
TheGreenGolem ( @TheGreenGolem@lemmy.dbzer0.com ) English1•5 months agoOh, a D6x0. 620 was my first ever company laptop! I loved it. Easily swappable cd-rom, you could change it to an additional 4cell battery. Combined with a 9 cell one it lasted basically the whole work day.
