dutchkimble ( @dutchkimble@lemy.lol ) 28•4 months agoGnome is a big reason I switched fully to linux
cobra89 ( @cobra89@beehaw.org ) 6•4 months agoFunny I feel like a lot of people said that about the multiple desktop cube that is finally coming back to plasma.
Sina ( @Sina@beehaw.org ) 2•4 months agoGnome especially Mutter is a big reason why I waited for so long to make the full switch.
TheEntity ( @TheEntity@kbin.social ) 15•4 months agoLooks like a boring update but being boring is kinda the thing I appreciate in GNOME. It’s all about expectations.
ProgrammingSocks ( @ProgrammingSocks@pawb.social ) 3•4 months agoGnome 40 was not a boring update! :)
umbrella ( @umbrella@lemmy.ml ) 2•4 months agothe couple of releases after were also pretty cool
Guenther_Amanita ( @Guenther_Amanita@feddit.de ) 15•4 months agoWhile most changes (file manager improvements, etc.) are cool to have and are just improvements to the overall experience, what’s up with the “fractional scaling and Mutter improvements”?
Why does nobody explain them more? At least for me, fractional scaling is the first thing that comes to my mind when thinking about what Gnome needs the most.
And performance improvements are also good to hear, but in which aspect? Triple dynamic buffering?Does anyone have further information?
Vincent ( @Vincent@feddit.nl ) 7•4 months agoI believe the explanation is “it’s hard, it’s being worked on, but it will take some time until all the pieces are in place”, and they’re not going to hold off releases until it is.
Deceptichum ( @Deceptichum@kbin.social ) 3•4 months agoYeah but new wallpaper! Between this and Plasma 6 I’m having a hard time choosing based on all these new wallpapers.
Ludrol ( @Ludrol@szmer.info ) 11•4 months agoOk, the change for the date format in file manager is huge!
They refused to implement it for years
And I think that was my biggest gripe with gnome.
Jordan_U ( @Jordan_U@lemmy.ml ) 5•4 months agoLike me, that user wants to use ISO-8601 format for dates.
I didn’t see that option in the screenshot. Anyone know if that’s possible in this Beta?
acockworkorange ( @acockworkorange@mander.xyz ) 3•4 months agoHoly cow, over a decade!
ProgrammingSocks ( @ProgrammingSocks@pawb.social ) 3•4 months agoSomething something filepicker thumbnails. I’m a fan and daily user of GNOME but it has its issues.
unique_hemp ( @unique_hemp@discuss.tchncs.de ) 2•4 months agoGnome devs are just built different.
darkphotonstudio ( @darkphotonstudio@beehaw.org ) 11•4 months agoWhen is not sucking going to be added as a feature?
Possibly linux ( @possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip ) English15•4 months agoI personally like gnome. Its just a matter of taste I suppose.
01011 ( @01011@monero.town ) 9•4 months agoI chuckled but that’s harsh.
Bonehead ( @Bonehead@kbin.social ) 6•4 months agoThat’s a Priority 4 Severity 4 ticket. I wouldn’t bet on it being completed until sometime during the next epoch.
banghida ( @banghida@lemm.ee ) 5•4 months ago🍼
explodicle ( @explodicle@local106.com ) English3•4 months ago darkphotonstudio ( @darkphotonstudio@beehaw.org ) 4•4 months agoLol thanks but I already use it. That’s what I went to when I finally gave up on Gnome.
Sina ( @Sina@beehaw.org ) 3•4 months agoKDE devs have taken steps to make more Gnome-like software. A new generation of Gnome devs in the distant future could go full circle ^
bitwolf ( @bitwolf@lemmy.one ) 1•4 months agoIf that is the case I might jump ship haha.
There’s a lot more gnome dev streams to learn from. Where as KDE blogs more but are not as technical in their blogs.
Id love technical content on both so I can learn how to contribute overtime by following their news.
ProgrammingSocks ( @ProgrammingSocks@pawb.social ) 1•4 months agoThat was already in some version of GNOME 3
Gutless2615 ( @Gutless2615@ttrpg.network ) English9•4 months agoAm I taking crazy pills or did that article not actually include any new features?
Lunya \ she/it ( @backhdlp@iusearchlinux.fyi ) 9•4 months agoThis would be a minor release in KDE
Possibly linux ( @possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip ) English7•4 months agoIt is a fairly minor release for gnome. The problem with KDE is that it has so many features that it is harder to use and setup. It also doesn’t have a focus on stability.
01011 ( @01011@monero.town ) 8•4 months agoKDE has been very stable for years.
Possibly linux ( @possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip ) English4•4 months agoThat’s not my experience. I’ve had bugs
Adanisi ( @Adanisi@lemmy.zip ) English3•4 months agoI’m not sure what you mean??
KDE is usable out of the box, and very easy to use.
Possibly linux ( @possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip ) English2•4 months agoNot for me. I want my desktop to be functional and I don’t really customize all that much.
Adanisi ( @Adanisi@lemmy.zip ) English2•4 months agoI mean, I run basically stock KDE with the dark theme. It seems functional but maybe we just have different ideas of functional?
bitwolf ( @bitwolf@lemmy.one ) 2•4 months agoThey’ve also had to spend several cycles rearchitecting the codebase and reducing duplicated efforts.
Plasma 6’s future seems very bright. Especially if they keep improving Breeze especially if they keep focusing on sane defaults and a simple unified and consistent style.
Possibly linux ( @possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip ) English8•4 months agoIt seems like a polishing release to me. Nice of see.
mFat ( @mfat@lemdro.id ) English1•4 months agoI still miss gnome 2, before gnome shell was a thing…
