Will legit game cartridges still work with it?
And what hardware besides the 3ds is needed? Is a microsd needed?
Original/legit game cartridges will still work afterward, and unless something’s changed/improved, I’m pretty sure you still need a microSD card to set it up.
K, this is probably dumb but will my save filed be lost?
Your saves should remain intact, and I’m pretty sure any guides you follow will have you back them up just in case. I think for some it may even simply be part of their standard setup.

64GB is technically better than >64GB for GB/GBA Games. Because of block size and read speed of the SD cart reader on the 3DS. I think the real problem would be noticeable way up 64. like 512GB…

I soft modded mine a few years ago. It kept all my previously purchased digital games, saves, just added the ability for homebrew. You just need an SD card.
