“So much promise”?!

Are Greens appeasing Labor in a secret deal? This support is out of character with their stance on privacy.

For instance, Greens were the only ones to push against the “Identify and Disrupt Bill” (which newspapers ignored in favour of “Freedom” March dramas).

The myGovID app is compatible with most smart devices and is only available from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Does it work without Google play services? The NSW app doesn’t.

I’m rather disgusted with the idea of Aus government being a serfdom of Google and Apple. Literally can’t access your own government ID without their permission and blessing. If Google or Apple disable your account then you can no longer access part of your government services.

(I recently lost access to a Microsoft account, they didn’t think I was a real person, despite the account working fine for most of a year)

    • Since I use Ubuntu Touch, I’m a bit frustrated with the state of government apps only supporting Android and IOS. Recently managed to finally run Android apps on it, but they still don’t all work perfectly. I understand that it’s not something most people know about let alone use, but I fear that if any government app becomes essential that we lock in the existing duopoly, at least in Australia. At least if it was open source it could perhaps be ported over.

Minister for finance and the public service Katy Gallagher: rejects racial identifiers in digital ID legislative amendments. This would have verified people as indigenous for the purpose of welfare cards.

    Also…

banks want to charge consumers every time they securely access their accounts by way of an authentication tax. The deal is a double-edged sword because as keen as banks are, the application of fees on transactions may invoke a warranty they are safe, which is in itself challenging.

    and some more good news…

The government will also support amendments that confirm the voluntary use of digital ID and ensure that the alternative ways to verify ID to access services are easy to use and don’t disadvantage those who do not want a digital ID

  • I’m ok with this if used responsibly. I use a digital app to verify my ID and approve transactions in Singapore instead of having to use some points of ID and don’t have to wait days for verification.
