gerryflap ( @gerryflap@feddit.nl ) 60•2 months agoI’m supposed to have energy as an adult?! I have way more time than energy. Most of that time is spent doing useless shit like watching YouTube because I’m too exhausted to do anything useful
MentalEdge ( @MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz ) 32•2 months agoNo, I’m willing to bet you have plenty of energy. Society has simply deemed that all of it must be spent on being productive for the sake of everyone except yourself.
“If your employees have energy to spend on meaningful activities during their own time, you’re leaving money on the table. Squeeze them harder while they are on the clock.”
SturgiesYrFase ( @SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml ) 10•2 months agoAgree to disagree, I likely have a sleep disorder, so I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in nearly 10 years! Check, and, mate! Fuck I hate my life…
gerryflap ( @gerryflap@feddit.nl ) 2•2 months agoDisagree. I used to spend time on more energy-intensive hobbies like programming and music production. But I’ve had mono and COVID in 2020 and I’ve never felt the same thereafter. Also working 40 hours a week drains a lot of energy
Rinox ( @Rinox@feddit.it ) 6•2 months agoIf you have time then try working out and doing sports. It sounds asinine, but I’ve found that exerting yourself increases your levels of energy in the long term. Even something small, a little bit at a time will be greatly beneficial. Also try doing it with someone else and try having an active social life that will motivate you to go out of the house and stop spending all the evening alone on the couch watching YouTube (which is really detrimental, ask me how I know it).
Like the Romans said “mens sana in corpore sano” (you need a healthy body to have a healthy mind)
gerryflap ( @gerryflap@feddit.nl ) 1•2 months agoYeah sports were my first attempt to solve it. I’m running twice a week usually and have done a few half marathons now. It’s helped a bit, but my energy is still not amazing. It’s probably related to having issues with mono and COVID in 2020, I’ve never been the same since then. Working 40 hours per week didn’t help either.
m4xie ( @m4xie@slrpnk.net ) 37•2 months agoMost old people don’t have that much money. Many UK pensioners freeze in their homes every year.
SturgiesYrFase ( @SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml ) 10•2 months agoMy wife and I make a decent income between the two of us, and we nearly froze to death winter before last! £500pcm+ to keep our house at like 10°C, absolute madness.
m4xie ( @m4xie@slrpnk.net ) 7•2 months agoBritain got it so bad with the natural gas prices in the last few years.
SturgiesYrFase ( @SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml ) 6•2 months agoI’m from Vancouver, Canada, so everything seemed so cheap when I moved to the UK…except natural gas and electricity. Like I held the lease and had all the utils in my name for a house when I lived in Canada, 14 people, all gamers. And the bills in winter were less than half what my wife and I were paying this past winter.
PhreakyByNature ( @PhreakyByNature@feddit.uk ) English2•2 months agoThat’s wild, how big is your house? My monthly spend on heating is 1/4 of that during winter to keep it at 21.
SturgiesYrFase ( @SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml ) 2•2 months agoSingle glazed everything, shoddy extension that’s falling to bits, and no insulation anywhere, 12ft ceilings and also our boiler is shit. It’s a two bedroom Victorian terrace, ground floor. Fighting with Edinburgh Council to get approval for a much needed renovation, but even though the category of listing our home is literally only covers the front facade, our really quite modest renovation plan would “be a detriment to the character of the neighbourhood”. Our upstairs neighbour also paid significantly less that winter…but they got approval to rip all their floors up and install insulation and double glazed windows.
PhreakyByNature ( @PhreakyByNature@feddit.uk ) English2•1 month agoThat’s rough :(
masterspace ( @masterspace@lemmy.ca ) English23•2 months agoLmao, no.
Go work a job in a different industry before thinking you have it so tough.
Programmers make more money, have more vacation and free time, and consequently typically have stabler lives, than literally every single other professional industry.
jol ( @jol@discuss.tchncs.de ) 6•2 months agoAlso their careers grow faster and steadier even in a recession, changing jobs is easier and comes with a significant pay raise each time, and they mostly don’t have to deal with costumers.
JackbyDev ( @JackbyDev@programming.dev ) English2•2 months agoNah, I took a pay cut at my new job from where I was laid off due to the recession.
CanadaPlus ( @CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org ) 22•2 months agoI mean, American programmers seem to make a ton.
Bipta ( @Bipta@kbin.social ) 24•2 months agoYes but they live in places that cost a ton, and then get fired with no notice.
GissaMittJobb ( @GissaMittJobb@lemmy.ml ) 8•2 months agoAgreed to the part about job security being terrible in the U.S, but it’s worth mentioning that the premium you get in income for living in for example San Francisco far outweighs the cost of housing.
entropicdrift ( @entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org ) 3•2 months agoI live in rural Pennsylvania but I work remotely for a San Francisco startup.
I get paid less than my coworkers who live in big cities, but more than any of my friends who live in my area except one who’s also a programmer.
ComradeSharkfucker ( @sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml ) English16•2 months agoIve always thought thsoe graphs were bullshit, im a college student and I have no time, energy, or money. I feel like this will not change drastically as i age lmao
Cowbee ( @Cowbee@lemmy.ml ) 8•2 months agoDepends on Major, I have more time as a Worker than I did in College. More energy, too.

Elise ( @xilliah@beehaw.org ) 11•2 months agoI actually got bucket loads of free time after finishing my studies, I didn’t know what to do with it. Like why does everyone always act like students have time? It’s a full time job plus you have to do projects and homework.

In my experience it takes 2 weeks to properly recover. 2 weeks of serious nothing.
Then from that beautiful well of freedom and nothingness, good things commence to flowing.
pfm ( @pfm@scribe.disroot.org ) 8•2 months agoI’ve recently changed to a part-time contract, thanks to decent wages we get in IT. None of my friends outside of IT could afford that. If anyone claims IT professionals earn too little, they should change their job and see how much their life improves then.
sgibson5150 ( @sgibson5150@slrpnk.net ) 8•2 months agoI like the joke but I suspect the levels for “young programmer”, “adult programmer”, and “old programmer” would all look a lot like “programmer”. It’s true at least in my case. The occupation does seem to attract the more spicy-brained among us. 😆

schnurrito ( @schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de ) 1•2 months agoAdult here, have plenty of money (and growing) actually. Wish I could easily buy more time with that money, but the system of wage labor mostly just isn’t flexible enough that there are many employers who will agree to “you get a few more weeks of vacation but a few thousand currency units less annual salary”. If I could do that, I would.
