Last Saturday, Israel massacred hundreds of Palestinian civilians in an operation to rescue four Israeli hostages. American commentators rushed to justify the brutal operation.

Any framing to justify the operation has to ignore the many offers to return the hostages and end hostilities that Israel rejected.

“Israel uses the rescue of four of its civilians as cover to kill hundreds of non-Israeli civilians” more accurately conveys the intent here.
