In your opinion, what video games have terrible names?
TachyonTele ( @TachyonTele@lemm.ee ) 37•6 months ago2017’s Prey
saigot ( @saigot@lemmy.ca ) 24•6 months agoThe names aren’t terrible by themselves but it really sucks that the critically acclaimed narrative space puzzler “outerwilds” released the same month as the open world space rpg “outerworlds”.
TachyonTele ( @TachyonTele@lemm.ee ) 7•6 months agoSupposedly their offices were near eachother and they’d joke about that.
Paradachshund ( @Paradachshund@lemmy.today ) 22•6 months agoDivine Divinity (sorry Larian, but it’s true)
ClassifiedPancake ( @ClassifiedPancake@discuss.tchncs.de ) 17•6 months agoAll games and movies that reuse the same name as the very first title in the franchise to make a “fresh start” while spitting on the original.
CyberMonkey404 ( @CyberMonkey404@lemmy.ml ) 4•6 months agoAny examples off the top of your head?
Poik ( @Poik@pawb.social ) 7•6 months agoNFS: Hot Pursuit. HP2 was a perfect game in the arcade racer genre. HP remake doesn’t even have bots in multiplayer, meaning you and your buddies won’t be chased by cops because no one plays that game and the cops have to be played by humans.
CyberMonkey404 ( @CyberMonkey404@lemmy.ml ) 1•6 months agoThanks
ClassifiedPancake ( @ClassifiedPancake@discuss.tchncs.de ) 6•6 months agoTomb Raider, Doom, Mortal Kombat for example
Not bad games at all but I just don’t like that it’s claiming the name of something, basically saying it wasn’t good enough.
CyberMonkey404 ( @CyberMonkey404@lemmy.ml ) 2•6 months agoThanks
Stepos Venzny ( @SteposVenzny@beehaw.org ) English16•6 months agoAnything with a subtitle that isn’t a sequel or licensed game.
- Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
- Blood Omen: The Legacy of Kain
- Condemned: Criminal Origins
- Immortals: Fenyx Rising
That sort of thing.
Annoyed_🦀 ( @Annoyed_Crabby@monyet.cc ) 9•6 months agoKingdome Come: Deliverance.
So the sequel gonna be different subtitle right? Right? Not just adding a 2 at the back right?
callouscomic ( @callouscomic@lemm.ee ) English15•6 months agoA lot of JRPG’s with weird punctuation and seemingly ly Neverending titles or made-up words.
- Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Re:Chain of Memories and Dream Drop Distance and χ Back Cover and 0.2 Birth by Sleep and Re Mind and -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX- and HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue
- Legend of Fantasy: Monstrum Refantazio
- Death end re;Quest
- Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3 V Generation
- UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH Exe:Late and II Sys:Celes
- Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs The Soulless Army
- .hack//G.U. Last Recode
- void* tRrLM2(); //Void Terrarium 2
- Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator and lots of other Atelier games
- Divine Divinity
- Infinite Undiscovery
- Various Daylife
- Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
- Mon-Yu: Defeat Monsters And Gain Strong Weapons And Armor. You May Be Defeated, But Don’t Give Up. Become Stronger. I Believe There Will Be A Day When The Heroes Defeat The Devil King.
AutoPastry ( @AutoPastry@sopuli.xyz ) English4•6 months agoAgree with most of these but
Revengeance is perfect
Cyborganism ( @cyborganism@lemmy.ca ) 2•6 months agoI don’t believe any of these titles are real.
Dragon Rider (drag) ( @dragonfucker@lemmy.nz ) English1•6 months agoDrag is personally offended that you don’t like Revengeance. Drag is a big fan of musical theatre and also of turning fascists into confetti.
trslim ( @trslim@pawb.social ) 1•6 months agoThe MegaTen games have some weird ones, yeah. Like Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, then the sequel to that came out and it was just Soul Hackers 2. Same with how Persona 1 was Megami Ibunroku Persona and then became Shin Megami Tensei: Persona. Oh and how theres two Persona 2s, Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment. Great games but man, really should have been like Persona 2 Part 1 and Part 2.
DibbleDabble ( @DibbleDabble@lemmy.ml ) 1•6 months agoBlazBlue: Chronophantasma Extend
Gamma ( @GammaGames@beehaw.org ) English14•6 months agoOctopath Traveler
Octopath Traveler II
Triangle StrategyBravely Default is pretty bad too
Paradachshund ( @Paradachshund@lemmy.today ) 3•6 months ago+1 for octopath. Such a weird name.
Iapar ( @Iapar@feddit.org ) 4•6 months agoPretty fitting name. You have 8 characters and you travel their path with them. Couldn’t be more fitting to be honest.
Paradachshund ( @Paradachshund@lemmy.today ) 7•6 months agoIt sounds extremely weird as a native English speaker. Makes you think of an octopus.
Iapar ( @Iapar@feddit.org ) 3•6 months agoYou mean that animal which is know for its 8 feet?
Dragon Rider (drag) ( @dragonfucker@lemmy.nz ) English5•6 months agoWait, octopath isn’t about an octopus??
Paradachshund ( @Paradachshund@lemmy.today ) 3•6 months agoNope its a pretty standard anime style jrpg
Gamma ( @GammaGames@beehaw.org ) English3•6 months agoIt’s “fitting” but that doesn’t make it a good name
Iapar ( @Iapar@feddit.org ) 1•6 months agoNot by itself but it certainly is a good criteria.
GiveOver ( @GiveOver@feddit.uk ) 10•6 months agoSupersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars. Not much changed between this and Rocket League, the name was probably the main thing holding them back.
Stepos Venzny ( @SteposVenzny@beehaw.org ) English6•6 months agoIt’s got a beautiful flow when you say it out loud, though.
Swedneck ( @Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de ) 1•6 months agothat’s just begging to be referred to solely as “SARPBC” pronounced as a word
Cyborganism ( @cyborganism@lemmy.ca ) 7•6 months agoHahaha a few come to mind from the NES and SNES era.
“Hey punk! Are you TUFF-E-NUFF?” comes to mind.
Edit: was missing the first part of the title. Thanks for pointing it out! 👍
TachyonTele ( @TachyonTele@lemm.ee ) 1•6 months agoThis post is about bad names, not brilliance!
Annoyed_🦀 ( @Annoyed_Crabby@monyet.cc ) 6•6 months agoI hate SuperGiant’s naming scheme. Bastion? Transistor? Pyre(i couldn’t even remember this one)?? Hades??? Cmon man, your company isn’t called Giant but SuperGiant, make it stand out as your company’s name!
Also VVVVVV. No one will notice this game if it come out today. Prey(2017) is the prime example of this.
JackbyDev ( @JackbyDev@programming.dev ) English1•6 months agoAll 6 of those names are fine to me. VVVVVV is borderline but not nearly as bad as some of the stuff here.
thingsiplay ( @thingsiplay@beehaw.org ) 6•6 months ago- Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi (PSX, 1997)
TauriWarrior ( @TauriWarrior@aussie.zone ) 14•6 months agoTechnically, one Star Wars game should be called Star Wars: Dark Forces IV: Jedi Knight III: Jedi Outcast II: Jedi Academy
Dragon Rider (drag) ( @dragonfucker@lemmy.nz ) English4•6 months agoHalo Infinite. Numbers are for mainline games. Subtitles are for spinoffs.
TachyonTele ( @TachyonTele@lemm.ee ) 1•6 months agoInfinite is a great name if the game is good enough to be something like Team Fortress or Counter Strike. A game that’ll be played for decades.
Here’s the online game, and here are the solo games. That would have been great… if the studio could make good games.
Cyborganism ( @cyborganism@lemmy.ca ) 4•6 months agoI also found Death Stranding to be weird.
It’s like… Death coming ashore?
I mean I get that it’s about this whole concept of people having their own beach when they die or being able to travel to other people’s beaches or something weird like that. But they’re really pushing it with that title.
And also the fact that Death end with ‘th’ followed by a word starting with ‘s’ makes it really difficult to pronounce.
itsgallus ( @itsgallus@beehaw.org ) English4•6 months ago“Echoes of the Plum Grove”. Sounds like they asked ChatGPT and went with the first suggestion.
Swedneck ( @Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de ) 2•6 months agothat sounds like a parody wuxia move
“[Echoes of the Plum Grove]!” enemy rushes off to the toilet as they start undergoing profoundly healthy bowel movements
tetris11 ( @tetris11@lemmy.ml ) 4•6 months agoUbuntu have had some weird-ass names for their titles (Warty Warthog, Edgy Eft, urgh) and the games themselves have been pretty lacklustre.
There was this one level where you had to rearrange icons to the left and it just looked stupid. Unity or something.
CalcProgrammer1 ( @CalcProgrammer1@lemmy.ml ) 5•6 months agoThe name Unity just needs to be avoided. I get the well intentioned meaning behind the word, but it has been the name of three major controversial/disastrous products in semi-recent history - Ubuntu Unity Desktop, Assassin’s Creed: Unity, and the Unity Engine.
