SoupBrick ( @SoupBrick@pawb.social ) English31•15 days ago amino ( @amino@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) English17•15 days agoit’s Black American English not “gen z slang”
Swedneck ( @Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de ) English23•15 days agoa lot of online (which is where gen z stuff comes from) culture is just black american culture, it’s not particularly different from how most european languages have a bunch of french loan words.
amino ( @amino@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) English6•15 days agoit’s really different actually since other Europeans adopting french terms is a result of french colonialism conferring an allure of prestige to french terms. the reason Europeans were desperate to integrate french culture was because they also wanted to enjoy the spoils of colonialism.
whereas people using BAE outside of its cultural context perpetuates a relationship of parasitic colonial extraction, not of symbiotic cultural exchange as most white people would claim
frezik ( @frezik@midwest.social ) English2•14 days agoOr, like, white Americans adopting any other culture from black Americans.
SoupBrick ( @SoupBrick@pawb.social ) English9•15 days agoHmm, looks like it has been used by a variety of people for a while. This is what I could find, but if you have a better source for that claim, I am open to correction.
BakerBagel ( @BakerBagel@midwest.social ) English5•15 days agoAll American counter culture comes from the black community.
Evkob (they/them) ( @Evkob@lemmy.ca ) English10•15 days agoCounter-culture? I’d go as far as saying most American culture ultimately comes from the Black community. It’s usually either them or the queers (and quite often, Black queers!)
NostraDavid ( @NostraDavid@programming.dev ) English1•15 days ago“Gen Z” is American, “Black Americans” is American.
I don’t see the difference. 's both American.
amino ( @amino@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) English5•15 days agoyou seriously think there’s no difference between Black Americans using this term since the 70’s and white kids on TikTok appropriating language?
Swedneck ( @Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de ) English22•15 days agobro is getting cooked by the word cooked

Darkassassin07 ( @Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca ) English11•15 days agoTake the perspective of things that get cooked.
If you’re being cooked, things aren’t exactly going your way… Others around you are having a great time though, dinner is served.
As to being sick of it; OP, you may be turning into a crotchety old man… Not cool dude; that’s like, totally lame. :P

RandomPrivacyGuy ( @RandomPrivacyGuy@lemm.ee ) English5•15 days agoYoutube videos: This guy is COOKED! His career is OVER! (nothing is going to happen and everyone will forget in two days).
NostraDavid ( @NostraDavid@programming.dev ) English5•15 days agoOh shit, looks like OP is crashing out_!_
lugal ( @lugal@sopuli.xyz ) English4•15 days agoWait, is this actually how young people talk or are you gaslighting us?
BakerBagel ( @BakerBagel@midwest.social ) English10•15 days agoLingo and slang changes every decade or so. I don’t know why people are surprised that the trends from when they are 14 are no longer cool.
lugal ( @lugal@sopuli.xyz ) English4•15 days agoI’m not surprised that language changes, I just never heard this particular phrasing before but judging from your offendedness, I guess it is used
winterwulf ( @winterwulf@lemmy.eco.br ) English1•15 days agoWell, they didn’t imply that it is surprising.
SkyeStarfall ( @SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) English4•15 days agoI mean I use it, and I’m in my mid-20
lugal ( @lugal@sopuli.xyz ) English1•14 days agoIn that case, English is broken. This is too much, we are literally cooked and need a new global lingua franca
SkyeStarfall ( @SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) English4•14 days agoWhy? New slang has always been forming, it’s literally how language evolves
lugal ( @lugal@sopuli.xyz ) English2•14 days agoThe joke was that I used the very word I was complaining about (hopefully correctly) in combination with another word (literally) many pedants get pissed when used in a non literal sense
SkyeStarfall ( @SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) English2•14 days agoI seeee, it did cross my mind it being a joke, but I also thought you might have been mocking it lol
lugal ( @lugal@sopuli.xyz ) English1•14 days agoI’m not mocking it, I’m totally cooking it
P4ulin_Kbana ( @P4ulin_Kbana@lemmy.eco.br ) English2•14 days agoBro cooked but nobody ate it 💀
winterwulf ( @winterwulf@lemmy.eco.br ) English4•15 days agoWhat this means please.

UD is heavensent for people like me who have to use YT channels like Lessons in Meme Culture (LIMC) to keep up with the kids, but have typically no idea what the new slang means.
