jagermo ( @jagermo@feddit.org ) English24•23 days agoI would recommend deezer over Spotify. Spotify enables Rogan and all his bullshit
Kualdir ( @Kualdir@feddit.nl ) English7•23 days agoQobuz! It pays artists the best out of any streaming service appartenly
tatann ( @tatann@lemm.ee ) English1•23 days agoOr Qobuz (both are french)
gon [he] ( @gon@lemm.ee ) English10•23 days agoBoth Tuta and Proton have a free tier for their email. Also, I think Infomaniak’s kmail might be an even better replacement for the typical email/cloud providers than the aforementioned, for normies at least.
Linearity ( @Linearity@infosec.pub ) English6•23 days agoOrion is not a paid browser. Kagi, however, is a paid search engine, and Orion was made by the Kagi team. The browser is completely free and is in all Apple OSs (coming to Linux soon) and gathers absolutely no data. And the browser comes with no search engine chosen by default so it isn’t really an ad for Kagi.
I personally think it’s amazing especially how you can have both Firefox and Chrome extensions on it. Its only issue is it being proprietary.
Orion was really well made. It is still beta, but when it is more stable, I’ll give it a second go! 100% recommended.
Sorse ( @Sorse@discuss.tchncs.de ) English4•23 days agoIn what way is mastodon privacy focused?
Well, the flyer originated here: https://old.reddit.com/r/BuyFromEU/comments/1jcr8ks/here_is_the_new_and_improved_guide_to_help_you/ but mastodon stands out as it has no commercial driver. There aren’t any ad-services profiling you, so that is a big win for your privacy.
Sorse ( @Sorse@discuss.tchncs.de ) English2•23 days agoYeah, but all your data is public, everyone can see it
skarn ( @skarn@discuss.tchncs.de ) English2•12 days agoYour data isn’t limited to your toots though.
Mastodon isn’t profiling your clicks, how long you spend reading each post, your DMs, your geolocation, your IP, stealing the addressbook from your phone, forcing you to use the app to steal more data, checking what other apps you have installed, track you around all the internet, and all the other toxic profiling bullshit that big tech social media does to beef up your advertisement profile.
You can set a deletion time and hope that every client comply with that :-)
Jerkface (any/all) ( @jerkface@lemmy.ca ) English1•22 days agoThere aren’t any ad-services profiling you
There’s no way to know that.
skarn ( @skarn@discuss.tchncs.de ) English1•12 days agoThere is a way of knowing that. You can choose from a variety of open source apps that just don’t contain tracking code.
No stealing your address book, no logging your GPS position, no snooping on your list of installed apps, no profiling your scrolling speed and which post you spend more seconds reading.
For the server part, the upstream code io open source and has no ad-trackers of that kind. Since you get to pick your instance you have a chance of hopefully going with one you trust not to have added them in afterwards.
Swedneck ( @Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de ) English2•18 days agofocused is not a good word for it but i do think it’s fair to say that not actively milking you for data is caring about privacy these days.
skarn ( @skarn@discuss.tchncs.de ) English1•12 days agoTo quote James Hetfield…
Sad but true.
STØERENFRIED ( @AEGIS2317@feddit.org ) English3•23 days agocan anybody explain why people hate on Waterfox? I’m using it for over a year now and it’s been great so far!
Bogasse ( @Bogasse@lemmy.ml ) English10•23 days agoI think it’s about none of Firefox forks being remotely capable of evolving on their own. So any large scale push to leave Firefox for any of these forks might only hurt Firefox which would in turn hurt its forks.
My insignificant opinion on the matter is that it’s great to have different flavors of Firefox that might be better suited for you, but it doesn’t appear to lead to a solution to the underlying issue.
STØERENFRIED ( @AEGIS2317@feddit.org ) English1•23 days agothanks for that answer so we should all continue supporting firefox, as it helps it’s forks too? i mean they are still a non profit but they have been doing weird stuff lately…
I would be more interested in why they didn’t go with LibreWolf?
STØERENFRIED ( @AEGIS2317@feddit.org ) English4•23 days agoi tried librewolf about 2 years ago but it didn’t quite work for me since it’s high security settings were breaking the sites i visited :O
Jerkface (any/all) ( @jerkface@lemmy.ca ) English2•22 days agoBreaks almost every site on the settings I’ve given it, by my design – at least, until I grant the site some permissions. You don’t get to run code on my browser unless I SAY you can!
fusiono ( @fusiono@feddit.uk ) English2•22 days agoNew version still misspells it “Mastadon” haha
darq ( @darq@goeppingen.social ) 2•23 days ago@SrMono isn’t bluesky also US owned
Absolutely, and they evaluate training AI on user content. It’s just a stopgap solution, I would always recommend mastodon instead.
Kualdir ( @Kualdir@feddit.nl ) English2•23 days agoThere’s also the free ksuite mail/drive as a free email alternative!
Ray1992xD ( @ray1992xd@feddit.nl ) English2•23 days agoEcosia also has a browser for Android and Windows/Mac. Just not Linux. Vivaldi is great for Linux.
Swedneck ( @Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de ) English1•18 days agoboth of these are just chromium reskins
Jerkface (any/all) ( @jerkface@lemmy.ca ) English2•22 days agoWhy Waterfox over LibreWolf? I have only used LibreWolf, which is my 99%-of-the-time browser, and I am curious.
EuroCentrist ( @EuroCentrist@feddit.org ) English2•22 days agoWhy not use something like Matrix (Element) as a messenger alternative?
lookupgeorgism ( @lookupgeorgism@lemm.ee ) English1•22 days agoI found it difficult to transfer contacts there compared to signal, but you’re right, it’s better.
krolden ( @krolden@lemmy.ml ) English1•22 days agoThese charts are pretty bad put a little more effort in
Yea, in hindsight the original (https://old.reddit.com/r/BuyFromEU/comments/1jcr8ks/here_is_the_new_and_improved_guide_to_help_you/) was not worth sharing.
CreativeCider ( @CreativeCider@feddit.org ) English1•23 days agoNo Threema?
NewDay ( @NewDay@feddit.org ) English1•23 days agoUnfortunately, Threema will never be a real alternative because of the price tag. There are just too many good alternative that are for free. For example, Element is European, privacy-wise good and for free.
skeptomatic ( @skeptomatic@lemmy.ca ) English1•22 days agoWhere’s the part suggesting getting off social media altogether, and stocking up on guns, ammo, and cans of beans?
Rene Raggl 🇪🇺 🇺🇦 ( @rraggl@mastodon.nl ) 1•22 days ago@skeptomatic @SrMono You find that aplenty over on Matrix…
And in other communities. Also you misspelled beer.
Rene Raggl 🇪🇺 🇺🇦 ( @rraggl@mastodon.nl ) 3•22 days ago@SrMono Cans of bears?
Mispelled it myself and corrected it 🍺 Coffee wouöd have been wiser.
RedPandaRaider ( @RedPandaRaider@feddit.org ) English1•23 days agoIs Waterfox the most recommended Firefox alternative nowadays after the recent Firefox controversy?
Also not sure I would call Proton privacy focused. I still use it, but they have been rating out an environment activist to French authorities before.
skarn ( @skarn@discuss.tchncs.de ) English1•12 days agoWell, Proton tries as best as they can, but they are not above the law.
They retain as little information as possible, but in the end when the authority come knocking best they can do is appeal, but in the end they can’t refuse to hand that over.
Privacy does not exist in absolute, but only in relation to a threat model. If your threat model includes state actors coming after you, you should avoid leaving them your billing information, so pay with bitcoin or cash by mail.
If, like most of us here, your threat model includes mainly surveillance capitalism, then using a credit card is fine.
