Becky Burke’s parents say her legs, waist and hands were secured by US immigration officers.
cloudhands ( @cloudhands@lemmy.ca ) English22•8 days agoWas hoping to read what triggered her being picked up by US authorities. Article doesn’t say until right at the end that she was turned away at the Canadian border … but doesn’t say why.
TheMcG ( @TheMcG@lemmy.ca ) English6•8 days agoOn an older article it just said “visa mixup”. Which didn’t really help at all.
Edit: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c80y3yx1jdyo this one has more details. She was denied entry to Canada as they believed she would try and work.
oce 🐆 ( @oce@jlai.lu ) English6•8 days agoMaybe she tried to eat people⸮
FancyPantsFIRE ( @FancyPantsFIRE@lemm.ee ) English4•8 days agoIIRC she was doing a chores/cleaning for lodging during her trip which is a bit of a gray area but they consider a visa violation (working) and she apparently mentioned it to border agents when trying to enter Canada.
Auli ( @Auli@lemmy.ca ) English4•8 days agoNot grey they consider that work, even in Canada.
Dyskolos ( @Dyskolos@lemmy.zip ) English13•8 days agoThis “country” is on my i-sure-as-fuck-will-never-visit-list for a looooong time now. This weird story wouldn’t have changed a thing in either direction though. Stupid clickbait.
eurisko ( @eurisko@lemmy.ca ) 6•8 days agoCruelty for cruelty’s sake. And why don’t we skim a little profit on top?
Embargo ( @Embargo@lemm.ee ) English4•8 days agoThe late great Becky Burke.
Aggravationstation ( @Aggravationstation@feddit.uk ) English3•8 days agoThe situation is ridiculous and I feel terrible for Ms Burke and all others who have been unnecessarily detained.
But thanks to this post I can’t stop reciting the “I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti” line in a Welsh accent in my head now.
some_guy ( @some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org ) 2•8 days agoOk, but tell me this… does she eat people?
Sarcasm, obviously.
