simple ( @simple@lemm.ee ) English55•12 days agoThis is the part where Disney blames bigots rather than admitting they just made a bad movie people never wanted to watch
jol ( @jol@discuss.tchncs.de ) English22•12 days agoThey purposely casted controversial actors hoping to get free publicity - Hollywood’s new favourite marketing ploy is outrage casting. But this time it didn’t pay off.
Scrubbles ( @scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech ) English19•12 days agoBigots definitely didn’t help, but I know far more people who didn’t go simply because “why would I want to see that?” Vs bigots
slaneesh_is_right ( @slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org ) English2•10 days agoThe bigots who got riled up by fox bews wouldn’t go to see it anyway. Maybe if they turn the evil witch jewish and snow white was the good nazi child.
Ledericas ( @Ledericas@lemm.ee ) English7•11 days agothe AI/CGI was so cringy too.
slaneesh_is_right ( @slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org ) English1•10 days agoWhat bothers me is that some of the scenes did look beautiful.
endeavor ( @endeavor@sopuli.xyz ) English5•11 days ago“we made the ultimate masterpiece and THE only people disagreeing with us are trolls/incels/haters/trump voters/faschists/literal SATAN” is a two pronged attack. Not only it makes everyone not in the loop think “oh no poor tiny company disney is being bullied for the movie I used to love as a kid!”. The person is likely to see a comment not liking the movie and think instantly that person is terrible.
Second is “I was lukewarm on the movie but man I don’t wanna be one of them nazis who hates this movie”
Classic change the conversation from absolute waste of money and creative bankruptsy of disney to culture war strategy straight out of literally the russian kgb playbook.
zabadoh ( @zabadoh@ani.social ) English26•12 days agoNone of this would be a problem if Disney had made a good movie.
But Disney didn’t.
Zegler is a talented young actress and singer, has had notable roles already, and will continue to have a great career.
Gal Godot has been a great Wonder Woman.
Both are good, regardless of what they post on social media.
The script, production and whole concept of this movie had far worse problems than Zegler and Godot.
Creepy dwarfs? Cheap looking plastic jewels? Boring script? Bad dance numbers? Bad music?
Were Zegler and Godot responsible for all of those?
Releasing the movie to influencers would NOT have helped the word-of-mouth. You have to make a good movie to begin with for that to work.
slaneesh_is_right ( @slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org ) English6•11 days agoThey had the chance to adapt the original movie they were too scared to the first time. Make it r-rated or something. i don’t understand who’s the movie is for.
zabadoh ( @zabadoh@ani.social ) English1•10 days agoUpon reflection, one of the concept mistakes was slavishly following the original plot.
The embellishments like the happy citizens, Evil Queen’s love for cheap plastic jewels, apple pies, etc. just felt unnecessary and tacked on.
Disney already made Maleficent relatively recently in 2014 as a meta take on the original, so where could they go from there?
CompactFlax ( @CompactFlax@discuss.tchncs.de ) English20•12 days agoThe original movie was made very much with an audience from 100 years ago in mind. Boomers have nostalgia for it, so can’t change the script too much. Meanwhile, millennials are socially aware and see the problems with the story. Disney tried to make everyone happy, and generate a little bit of free press, and failed to make anyone happy.
This was a remake that should never have gotten off the ground.
TachyonTele ( @TachyonTele@lemm.ee ) English14•12 days agoIt’s not even that. This story is easily watchable in any way you’d like, and everyone has probably already seen it as a kid.
HighFructoseLowStand ( @HighFructoseLowStand@lemm.ee ) English12•11 days agoIt was a shitty movie, that’s what went wrong.
And however obnoxious the racism on Twitter was about it, you can’t blame that for the thing losing a hundred mil.
🇰 🌀 🇱 🇦 🇳 🇦 🇰 🇮 ( @Kolanaki@pawb.social ) English11•12 days agoHm… I thought she was poisoned by an apple. Man… What else did they change in this movie from the original?
mansmaan ( @mansmaan@lemm.ee ) English10•12 days agoThis time it was a samsung
slaneesh_is_right ( @slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org ) English1•11 days agoShe’s got a computer virus xavier saved her tho
yarr ( @yarr@feddit.nl ) English10•10 days agoWhy is Hollywood hell bent on not creating original IP ever again? It seems like every movie is either a sequel, a reboot, a reimagining, etc. Does anyone just sit down and say “Hey, let’s create a brand new story with new characters and new ideas!”
Could it be that we are tired of seeing the same old stories with some “controversial” changes and then months of press complaining about people wanting to see or not wanting to see it?
It couldn’t be my imagination that in the 90s there were way less sequels/reboots.
Original movies are still being made, they’re just not advertised as much as IP-based movies.
yarr ( @yarr@feddit.nl ) English1•10 days ago3 out of how many though?
Dagwood222 ( @Dagwood222@lemm.ee ) English8•11 days ago[off topic]
If you want a modern take on Snow White et al, here’s the book for you.
The author takes all the Disney princesses and makes them evil. Snow White was so pale because she’s a vampire. Cinderella is a witch who drives the poor Prince insane.
Thanks for sharing!
Dagwood222 ( @Dagwood222@lemm.ee ) English3•11 days agoThe author’s bio is remarkable…
She was named after an anceint Goddess. Then it gets weird…
dumbass ( @dumbass@leminal.space ) English7•10 days agoMaybe we don’t want live action versions of all your good movies?
Maybe we want new stories to enjoy?
Maybe, just maybe, you made a bad movie?
some_dude ( @some_dude@lemm.ee ) English7•11 days agoWith all the “news stories” on the “controversy” surrounding this movie, I figured it was all manufactured drama to get people talking about it enough to watch it. If that’s true it’s a damn shame this is where we are in pop culture that even genocide is being used as a box office draw.
OkZeppo ( @FridayMike@lemm.ee ) English3•11 days agoShe’s finished.
𝓔𝓶𝓶𝓲𝓮 ( @Emmie@lemm.ee ) English3•11 days agoVictory has many parents. Failure’s past is a sham

ditty ( @dditty@lemm.ee ) English3•10 days agoApparently Gal Godot gives her worst performance yet as the Evil Stepmother.
