We would like to endorse what @kuketzblog@social.tchncs.de writes about the inclusion of an “AI assistant” into an instant messenger that is still widely used:
It is unfortunate that many journalists do not realise how dangerous the new AI in WhatsApp really is. Der Spiegel, for example, writes in a recent article: “Meta AI does not have access to users’ private chats, however, thanks to end-to-end encryption.” As a matter of fact, the AI does have access as it is used in the context of private chats or group chats. Sadly, this misinformation lulls users into a false sense of security. 🤦

Here are some good alternatives to WhatsApp:
@switchingsoftware@fedifreu.de is the website down? :sadness:
@sammypanda@mastodon.social
At this moment, our website is online. It is served by Codeberg Pages. As you can see on Codeberg’s status page, this service has been offline occasionally:
As far as we have heard, reasons include mindless “AI” crawlers, DDoS attacks and growing pains.
@switchingsoftware@fedifreu.de gah AI crawlers again :kerbal:
@switchingsoftware@fedifreu.de I am missing Threema, probably even more secure than Signal, because no (long-term) server storage needed.
@realSiegfried@troet.cafe
Right. Threema was not yet fully open source when we last updated this list. Will do soon.
@switchingsoftware@fedifreu.de Open source is a good criterion. Also important for me: Threema does not store any chats, but deletes the data after it has been received, and its servers are located in Switzerland.
@realSiegfried@troet.cafe
Switzerland is not a bonus for EU citizens as its data protection standards are lower than the EU’s.
@switchingsoftware@fedifreu.de Right. Which service uses only servers located in the EU? Aren’t Signal servers in the US?
@realSiegfried@troet.cafe This thread is about WhatsApp.
@switchingsoftware@fedifreu.de Sorry, okay.
Take makes it even more worth to mention where servers are located.
