This is the biggest anti-endorsement I’ve ever heard. Thank you for telling us all that. I will absolutely never be using this browser.

my ex fiance loved personalized ads because that’s how she found out about products she wanted and i was like… but you didn’t want it before you knew it existed. you were just living your life perfectly fine and now you’re $20 poorer

There’s also Chrome-derivatives and Chromium and whether those could excise the AI spyware and how deep that gets embedded into it.

That’s been a problem all along and one reason why I’ve never advised chrome alternatives unless someone is demanding to use Chrome over anything else. Firefox and probably 50 different forks of it would be superior in every way, and then maybe… Opera? I don’t even know anymore. Firefox is the only one holding things together.

That actually sounds like a good thing. Google has only been going down this exact path anyways with Chrome, at least if this happened it would make headlines and more people would wake up and leave that nightmare browser.

Blip. Just like that, they are dead to me. I know our society has decided super invasive data collection for ads is okay… I’ve decided that is another part of the social contract we need to revisit. With prejudice.

I mean, Android is kind of not really Linux. They’re cousins, at least.

Then again, iOS is also built on Unix, if I remember correctly, so I guess they’re all cousins.

Fuck that guy sucking my time with his ads. If I want to buy a ladder I’ll go online, or go to the store and buy one. Once all this world ending shit dies down let’s get rid of “advertising” as an economic concept. We don’t need any more socio/economic engineering, we need humanity and ecology.

i think some form of advertising is useful no matter the structure of your society: if you have a cool idea for a new product, getting the word out is an important way of making it a reality

what we don’t need is the constant, and ever-present repetitive drone of advertising mundane things that you already know about

Well im definitely not gonna use it then. It’s also apparently being built on top of Chromium so its not like its a brand new browser engine or anything. I wonder if they even had human programmers work on it, or just let their own AI churn out some slop for them.

So it’s not going to be available in the EU and UK? That’s fine.

As I understand it, the GDPR would require explicit consent from the subject before this data could be gathered in the first place, with some significant fines if breached.

News community around technology, social media platforms, information technology and governmental policy surrounding it.

What doesn’t fit here?

The core of the story has to be technology focused.

  • If article mentions “AI” in a sentence and then talks about business economics that doesn’t make it tech news.
  • Gaming is too many layers removed from technology. There are many dedicated communities that are a better fit for it.
  • Transporation is too many layers removed from technology. EVs while use many cool technologies have many dedicated communities that are a better fit for it.
  • Entertainment is too many layers removed from technology. While sometimes it can fit here, business or cultural aspects of it are a better fit for dedicated communities.
  • Cybersecurity. While it heavily focuses on technology, most of the time it’s too technical for most people who are not already invested in it. Should be posted in a dedicated communities unless it has broader connection to other tech areas.

Post guidelines

Title format

Post title should mirror the news source title. If you don’t like the title of article, look for an alternative source instead of editorializing it.

URL format

Post URL should be the original link to the article (even if paywalled) and archived copies left in the body. It allows avoiding duplicate posts when cross-posting.

[Opinion] prefix

Opinion (op-ed) articles must use [Opinion] prefix before the title. Opinion articles refer to articles that their publisher doesn’t explictly endorse.

Country prefix

Country prefix can be added to the title with a separator (|, :, etc.) if the news is from a local publisher who doesn’t clearly mention the country.

Rules

1. English only

Title and associated content has to be in English.

2. Use original link

Post URL should be the original link to the article (even if paywalled) and archived copies left in the body. It allows avoiding duplicate posts when cross-posting.

3. Respectful communication

All communication has to be respectful of differing opinions, viewpoints, and experiences.

4. Inclusivity

Everyone is welcome here regardless of age, body size, visible or invisible disability, ethnicity, sex characteristics, gender identity and expression, education, socio-economic status, nationality, personal appearance, race, caste, color, religion, or sexual identity and orientation.

5. Ad hominem attacks

Any kind of personal attacks are expressly forbidden. If you can’t argue your position without attacking a person’s character, you already lost the argument.

6. Off-topic tangents

Stay on topic. Keep it relevant.

7. Instance rules may apply

If something is not covered by community rules, but are against lemmy.zip instance rules, they will be enforced.
