This is the real kicker and something that has been observed many times over the years. It makes sense too. If something is really good, people want to support it and will look for ways to support the creators. It’s basically free advertising. People who can’t afford it aren’t going to support it anyway whether they pirate something or not.

The cruelty is the point. If a company can’t put someone in tape you in the ass prison for the rest of your life, are they really free?
