Great, thanks. I’ve been meaning to move over to piefed but was waiting for more clients to come out. Do you know if there are any good desktop browser front-ends?
What is the motivating logic for ‘waiting for more clients’? I’m not doubting you, I just hear the reason mentioned for lots of things and am curious to know the why behind it
Nothing deep really, just that more clients means more options to choose from. It also helps innovation as developers get ideas from other clients to improve theirs. The lemmy app explosion 2 years ago was a fun time as there were a ton of clients with their own design philosophy to choose from. Also, I browse lemmy/piefed on a desktop browser 80% of the time, so it’s great to see desktop UI alternatives. For example, Alexandrite is optimized for desktop browsing and it maximizes screen real estate compared to the default lemmy UI. I see blorp has a browser UI as well, however it seems to still be optimized for mobile browser viewing.
Blorp is one of these. and Photon plans to support PieFed in the future.

webis also listed there. It’s still kinda designed for mobile browsers though. I hope we can get a proper front-end for desktops in the future, like Alexandrite.Blorp dev here. I’m trying not to favor one platform over another. What about the desktop experience makes you feel like it’s not a proper desktop front-end? I know the stack routing is typically a mobile app thing, but I felt like it added to the desktop experience. Feel free to open a GitHub issue with suggestions if you haven’t already.
Hey. Not knocking on the blorp desktop version at all, it looks good! The main thing I’m looking for in desktop browser UIs is taking advantage of screen real estate and not leaving a lot of dead space. Similar to how old reddit is compared to new reddit and how the default UIs for lemmy and piefed really fill up the available space. One tab browsing is also a good feature IMO.
For example, Alexandrite can look like this:
And Voyager’s tablet mode, while not really optimized for desktop, also works somewhat:
I would not count on Alexandrite, as its last commit has been 5 months ago…
Maybe just try to use a default interface? PieFed’s frontend is not so much separated from backend and remains a first class citizen among the clients.
Just to add on to this, the web ui for piefed is the native client and basically every feature comes to the web ui first. The api that other frontends/clients is very much a work in progress and only exposes a subset of piefed’s features (so far).
In addition to this, these other clients are basically only using the same api routes that lemmy has since that is what they were designed for. So, they don’t really have many (or any) features that are piefed-only.
Edit: The PWA for piefed is quite usable and I have put a lot of effort into the UI changes I have contributed to make sure that the interface reacts well down to small screen sizes. So, give that a shot to get the full piefed experience.
Yeah I’m aware that Alexandrite hasn’t been updated for a while. Anyways, I checked out Voyager on a desktop browser and the tablet mode view is pretty similar. And since the devs are working on piefed compatibility, I think this will do for now until a better one comes.

Lol. One of the downsides to running a privacy conscious lemmy client is I don’t collect any data at all that could help me debug errors like this. Unfortunately the only way for me to debug this type of thing is to ask users to report the error with as much context as they can gather.

I’ve been using it casually for a few days now. After the initial shock of having no control over the layout, I actually really like it and don’t miss the configurability of other clients. It seems pretty well thought out.
I do REALLY need a way to save an image though.
You’re not the only person to ask about image saving. It’s on my todo list.
