Democrats are controlled opposition, they would much rather lose to Republicans (with whom their donors all share a class interest) than win under any pretense of populism, let alone socialism. It’s completely unacceptable to them. They will do anything to keep the left in line, because it’s the only thing they’re truly afraid of.
