Those positions are very much different that what some commentators are suggesting.
His clarifications help. His initial statement was ambiguous, particularly after his misstep regarding Iranian nuclear weapons. I understand the political impulse to keep your statements from writing checks you can’t cash down the road, but he also has to be careful about the tone he sets or he risks coming off as having no conviction. Offering a vague statement while your attention is elsewhere is not the level of clarity the situation called for.
