We know who is responsible.

We are damaging it – venting carbon, acidifying the oceans, stripping topsoil and collapsing biodiversity – not maliciously, but with a shrug. It is legal

Iirc, 40 countries have established constitutional rights of nature.

So there, at least, it is not legal
