Trump claims he will send $5,000 to every citizen if Republicans hold on to control of Congress
Trump has claimed he will send every citizen $5,000 if Republicans retain control of the US House and Senate. He provided no details about where he would source this money from or the legality of the incentive.
“So if the Republicans win, you win with us … it will be called the Trump dividend,” the president said.
Because I have other sources of news than just the fediverse and there are people whose full-time jobs is tracking his 21 lies a day average.
Trump did not blurt out a bribe because Trump would never, ever, pay it out. But idiots won’t know that.
By people whose full-time job is tracking his lies, you mean journalists? This is a story from the guardian and was presumably written by journalists. Not sure what you mean by sources outside the fediverse. I feel like I’m missing a thread in this conversation.
Second thing: It is a bribe by US federal laws, which usually cover the promise of an exchange as well as the actual exchange, c.f. 18 U.S. Code § 210 - Offer to procure appointive public office:
“Bribery” is also commonly understood to start at the offer, not at the consummation of the deal, at least in my experience. I don’t know how common that is in different US states, or if it’s that way outside the US.
Beside that, impeachable offenses don’t have to be crimes defined by US law, whether a given offense is impeachable is solely in the hands of congress. I actually think this is a good thing to try an impeachment over, it’s a blatant offer of a quid pro quo and Trump is getting so unpopular that Republicans might be willing to finally ditch him and pretend they never knew the guy. Who knows though, I’ve been half-expecting the Republican party to drop Trump and get a new standard bearer for six years now, and they keep not doing it, so clearly I don’t have an accurate read of the situation.
By that logic the pandemic stimulus checks were a bribe and so was the undelivered promise of DOGE checks and surplus checks he made previously this term.
But, back to reality, promising an indiscriminate federal policy if reelected is not a bribe.
The problem with it is he’s a fucking liar. And you’re a fucking liar for trying to deligitimize that stance with absurd fallacious statements.
I’m not trying to delegitimize anything. He is a liar, and obviously the checks are another lie. The Covid stimulus checks and the DOGE checks weren’t part of a quid pro quo. This time he said “If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000”. The fact that he’s bribing the entire population at once doesn’t make it not a bribe.
There can be two problems at once. Yeah, it’s a lie. It’s also a bribe. One of those is an impeachable offense.
