Computers used to scream out in pain when connected to the Internet. It was a warning.
I always likened it to Abyssal.
This was codified by the fact that my flatmate in college could decipher it in real-time —and was a bona fide tech warlock w/ an oil-cooled rig and a visit from the NSA when he was only 12. (his dad was in banking; it made the local news, etc.)
His powers were preternatural and clearly granted to him for a price.

Downloading file parts from the usenet before manually joining them and decoding them really made you more selective and intentional about which media* you consumed. Now I’m served 5 minute videos with a triple split of 6 second clips.
Great point
We should’ve never allowed internet onto our game consoles now we get buggy releases and worthless digital games that get revoked arbitrarily when you insult your government or local corporation.
Ironically, that doesn’t happen via alternative acquisition methods. Funny, that. 🤷🏼♂️
“Legit purchase”, in this instance, effectively has every buyer assume the position with a grateful smile on, like good li’l bottoms.
I’d argue it all went down hill with the industrial revolution. That’s right, they’ve twisted me into agreeing with Ted Kaczynski.
I think that’s viewing the past with rose colored glasses tbh. It’s easy to ignore, or simply not know about, the bad aspects of an era one does not live in, and hard to have an accurate mental picture over just how bad those are or how often they occur. However, anything positive about a past time that is not present in ours, or is perceived as being absent, one can immediately resent the absence of as soon as one learns of it.
What an interesting way to say “The grass is greener on the side you tend to.” 😜
(saying “water” instead belies one’s unfamiliarity with lawncare IRL.)
I always thought he had a point… people just called me a psycho because they weren’t willing to hear the point I was actually trying to make…
Too many progress traps
I was 10 years old when my parents brought broadband internet in to our home… I was never the same.
I remember playing StarCraft on battle.net, looking for that game that said “CABLE HOST” because you knew it wouldn’t lag as much.

NGL, that would’ve been quite different had people scanned said room with a black light. ☝🏼😑
I remember using my college computer room to go online in chat rooms etc for hours before heading home, good times, traumatic images
