I asked my mom if she watched the news today and she said she didn’t. I told her something I heard on the news. She then told me she had just heard that talked about on the news.

Listening and reading are both valid ways to aquire information. Often reading especially is significantly faster than watching something as well.
Personally I go through spurts of hyper engagement and non engagement so I wouldn’t really say I pay attention to the news bc I’m not consistent or deliberate
RSS feeds and Lemmy, mostly.
It sounds like maybe she heard it on the radio.
It’s possible she listens to the news. I listen to NPR and the Tagesschau (German news) daily.
