I actually live in portugal, and when I checked google maps it was called Lake America so it’s not just in America that it says that. Anyway I replaced it with mapquest but tbh MQ isn’t super useful in my city. Good thing I know the place well enough already I guess.
Try CoMaps!
Also great on iOS !
Oops I forgot they have some apps too
I’m seconding that!
In Canada here. For me it’s still Lake Ontario for both Google and Apple maps.
Of course it is your in Canada.
Some people in Canada are saying that Google and Apple maps are listing it as Lake America where others like myself see Lake Ontario. Seems to be random.
Might depend on their language settings. Like if they have “English - US” and “English -UK”, then the later may get the correct naming.
Good thing Apple sold out their customers.
What locale is your phone on? en-US? Because on en-UK I get Lake Ontario with America in parentheses on both Google maps and Apple maps. I suspect if you’re on en-US you get the official name in use in the US.
Oh like, it might be based on language settings rather than physical location? Huh. But yea my phone is indeed set to english.
Its not a move, its just common sense
“It’s one of the Great Lakes. There are acronyms like HOMES, and this is the ‘O,’” Berger explained, almost exasperated.
I think there’s far better reasons for not changing it than preserving an acronym, but perhaps they think being more blunt would deter Trump-supporting customers.
OpenStreetMaps (which is what everyone should be using) has a discussion on this - https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/gulf-of-america-gulf-of-mexico/124571/13.
Basically they added a piece saying “the US calls it this”, but nobody uses it.
its was the final straw for me and my iphone. When the battery gives up the ghost (probably soon) i ‘ll be replacing it with a non apple non google product.
You could consider Motorola, Fairphone or Jolla.
Aside from Motorolla being an American company, it’s still running Android (at best you wait until next year and their flagships will run Graphene which is still Android)
motorola mobility is a wholly-owned subsidiary of lenovo, and has been for a dozen years.
So it’s Chinese?
Is there a phone made by a not shit authoritarian country?
Samsung is partially made in South Korea for some models, but during the Globalization push and Apple made most of the parts and skilled labour in China the vast majority of phones or their components come from there.
Apple tried to make a specialty “Made in America” version of their phones for patriotic Americans and those who wanted to buy phones that weren’t produced in an authoritarian country. They designed it and as per usual they went out to order the custom size screws. Manufacturer after manufacturer looked at the contract and said no. Then they finally got to one and asked them out of frustration about why he said no. To paraphrase they answered “You. When you moved your manufacturing over to China and the Chinese manufacturers started to set up custom screws their production lines had to be able to make any screw at any length. Then when they weren’t selling production to you, they were selling quality screws cheaper to America, so the only way we could compete is to make dedicated production lines that crank out large amounts of products that are common and high quality or very affordable. That means machines that produce exactly one standard screw. Now if you are willing to fund additional floorspace, and custom screw machinery, and training for the operators like you did when you produced in China and are willing to wait for about 5 years to get it up to full production at American Wages, the answer is No.” and they kept hearing that so they had to go to the government that they promised to make the phones to and explained that they couldn’t do it without China, so they were let off.
Everything that they were using that wasn’t American was South Korean, and that wasn’t enough.
America is an authoritarian country, phones made there don’t count either.
Not yet but the current admiration is trying hard to get there.
Fair phone is HQd in the Netherlands
Jolla was already mentioned in this thread. There are also others.
Well that’s uplifting.
Motorola is not an american company anymore at least the mobile part that google bought and sold.
I wish Nokia had Graphene.
You should just move out of the US then? Outside, it’s lake Ontario.
actually its not. I’m in Australia and it shows as the dictators choice here

HereWeGo is pretty good, it still says Lake Ontario.
CoMaps is really solid but it needs to mimic the work flow of Google maps. Also, traffic based routing is essential for city driving. I would sacrifice a bit of privacy for the good of the community. I’m sure it could be done anonymously. I’d even be willing to pay for the service.
I wish it could be set as default in iOS.
I’ve seen the most politically apathetic centrists switch to mapquest over this whole thing, Maga really fucked google/apple. Lol
I neither need nor use maps but if I did I’d pick up a foldable one from my local gas station and if those don’t exist anymore then it’s MapQuest all the way!
House stupid, cave everywhere, use cave.
They still sell those!
