If you’re like me and in the process of trying to move away from Google Maps, it looks like one of the better alternatives is currently available for half the usual cost. OsmAnd is an Android OpenStreetMap client which can be used for free but with some add-on features requiring payment (Android Auto integration, for example). I just grabbed the lifetime “subscription” (one-time purchase) for $35.
Mods, please feel free to remove this if it’s too much in the vein of advertising. I have no relationship to OsmAnd or OpenStreetMap other than having contributed edits to OSM occasionally.
i never understood the difference between osmand+ and osmand~ on fdroid other than the price. certainly ~ has fewer features than + versus the plain osmand.
I think the main difference is how you choose to pay for additional features. If you log into any of the versions of the app with an OsmAnd cloud account that has an active subscription, those subscription features should work.
As I understand it, the “+” version available through Google Play is for those who just want to pay for the app once through that storefront and not have the separate OsmAnd cloud account.
If I’ve misunderstood that, I welcome corrections from anyone who knows better.
I always understood that OsmAnd on F-Droid has all the features of the paid version.
In other words: if you’re clever and principled enough to use a FOSS-only store you get it for free. Let the victims of commercial OSs pay.
I might be wrong but I rather enjoy seeing it this way.
edit: apparently the difference has something to do with cloud features which I never use anyhow 🤷

I did, test drove it for a while but liked OsmAnd better.
