Delighted that the Hide posts in communities with these words in their name and Keyword Filters features exist. Should be very helpful in curating my feed. I was wishing for this on some other social media and was curious if PieFed had it, and I am very pleased that it does. I may now be anble to solve some old headaches.

However, I was also wondering how they are different from each other?

It’s probably easiest to use an example. So, let’s pick on Doritos. Let’s say that you don’t want to see any posts that mention that cursed corn chip in your feed. How do these two features help you accomplish that? Note that all these communities are entirely hypothetical (I think).

Hide posts in communities with these words in their name

This feature will hide every single post from any community that has dorito in its name. This means that you won’t see any posts from the Doritos community, or the I Love Doritos community, but also the I Hate Doritos community. So, even if somebody makes a post about Oreos in the Doritos community (for whatever reason), and doesn’t mention anything about the devil’s triangle chips, you still won’t see it because of the community it is in.

    Keyword filters

But wait…you love Oreos (in this imagined scenario), and want to see posts about them. How should you filter a community like the Junk Food community, where there might be some posts about your beloved sandwich cookie, but also other posts about those tortilla chip terrors? That is where a keyword filter can help out. If you set up a keyword filter for dorito, then any post that mentions them will get filtered out for you, but posts that don’t will be shown like normal.

    Hope that helps!

Curious: if I keyword-filtered out Dorito would I still be shown posts that do not ever mention Dorito but do mention Doritos?

I guess what I’m trying to get at is if I should I put multiple tenses of a word in for filtering. And if so, if I should put in all of them, or if I can leave out the ones “contained” by other filters (e.g. if Dorito covers Doritos).

Alright, I just did some testing and here is what I found.

Creating a filter for Dorito does not block a post with Doritos in the title and vice versa. So, if you wanted to cover your bases there, you would want to make sure both forms of the terrifying triangles are keywords in your filter.

The other thing I found from testing is that keyword filters only apply to post titles. If somebody in the hypothetical Junk Food community makes a post titled Look More Attractive With This One Simple Chip and then had Dorito inside the post body, that would not get filtered.

Pinging @snoopy@piefed.social since they mentioned not being sure about that last part (I wasn’t either until I tried it).

    They are similar.

    The keyword filter

It works everywhere, it will hide every content on your timeline.

Hide posts in communities with these words in their name.

It will just hide content in a peculiar community. The only thing that i don’t know about is if the keyword is searched in the title or in title and body.

    Example of use case

Let’s take an example. Let’s suppose you enjoy Linux. In c/linux, sadly users showcase a lot their desktop. You like these picture, but not on c/linux where you would like to read more news about Linux kernel.

So, you filter the keyword desktop. And elsewhere you subcribe to a community about Linux deskop.
