As someone from North Carolina, this is the first we are hearing of this “ban”. You sure it applies to us?
Is this like the moonshine ban?
Guess we want more people blinded, for some reason
That’s only when the government poisons alcohol during things like prohibition to purposely blind people. It doesn’t happen from regular fermentation or distillation you’d do to make drinking alcohol

I have heard of that, they still poison ethanol nowadays for that purpose I hear. Meanwhile in prohibition they had medical alcohol and people bribed officials to get huge amounts of real liquor.
You get some methanol in making liquor. It depends mostly on things like fruit peels, or gin because of the juniper. That is why you dump everything produced from 160 degrees until 180, as methanol has a lower boiling point.
The antidote to methanol is alcohol though. But you have 20 minutes before permanent damage results. And death is one of those damages.
The blindness is because it makes formic acid in your blood, the same stuff red ants and stinging nettles use.
Alcohol has preferential binding on the receptors, so it pushes off the methanol.
I mean, yeah you can definitely go blind or worse if you drink the foreshots, and someone starting out fresh without knowing about that isn’t a remote possibility
If you used contaminated alcohol maybe, distilling doesn’t create additional methanol or separate it. The hard part of removing methanol is that its all throughout the liqour and hard to distill out. That’s why it’s important to ferment your own like how people that make kombucha or beer at home.
Where the problem came from during prohibition was people distilling alcohol they bought off the shelf like wood grain alcohol or other stuff that the government had methanol added to it to try and stop people from using it. Or people in places around the world that buy that kind of alcohol and dilute it out a bit since its cheap but then end up killing people that buy it without knowing.
Things like orange juice will most likely have more methanol than anything you’d ferment distill at home unless you start going industrial grade and use things like pectin enzymes. People distill their own alcohol around the world in places like India without issue for example. I only really started looking into all this because my coworker was showing me his distillation setup he had back on his farm in India
I’m not a chemist or anything but after learning more about it I learn how most of the blindness stuff and everything is mostly myth in the hobby world and a lot of it was created during prohibition
If you don’t start from corn there’s not very much methanol in wheat I have read.
Home distilling would be awesome without the fear of uncle sam breaking through your door demanding taxes
Wait, I can’t make liquor? They sell stovetop stills, and someone who isn’t me has been making some for the past year. I think it’s not illegal in my state, so there is no nexus to interstate commerce so the feds should have no jurisdiction but we don’t follow the constitution so idk.
The law is kinda absurd. By the same logic, home cooking should be made illegal because we can’t tax it like a restaurant meal. Despite that, I’m sure that when the big players catch wind of this case going to the supreme court, they’ll make sure all our justices are well paid enough to make sure it stays illegal.
One is necessary for life.
The other has a high incident of domestic abuse.
Yeah, goddamn woman burnt the fucking casserole again.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand thaaaaaat’s how we make tha-moonshine!
Big dumb dumb juice make big boom
Oh shit, one more thing to go fix!.
…If Tickle can’t get an A on his law examination, he will lose his moonshiners scholarship and wont pass the bar examination in time to fight for moonshine in court!. Meanwhile at the apalachian country side law enforcement has found the already running still concealed beneath all those dang lawbooks!Oh, I didn’t even realize that I broke a federal crime. Huh.
