• Sure, but most people who use ereaders, buy Kindles and use Amazon. That’s why they are the number one seller of ebooks and ereaders.

Grandma Witting doesn’t sit around thinking about the anti-capitalists and fediverse supporters who hate all businessmen and big companies. She wants to get her groove on with a trashy romance book that she can buy with two clicks, and then delete after she’s done reading.

Plus Amazon has solid devices. I have several myself, but my regular-ereaders are the Xteink, and Pocketbook. As long as people are reading, I don’t care what they are reading it on.

When you buy a product, you’re supporting the entire system which produced it. In the case of Kindle, you’re supporting DRM, proprietary eBook formats, advertising (hence this article), and the idea of revokable “licenses” to view books that you pay for but don’t own.

I get that a lot of people, including yourself, are either unaware or don’t care about these issues. But there are plenty who do, and there are plenty who will care when they realize what Amazon and other DRM vendors are doing. So I have plenty of reason to keep calling it out.

      • You’re right: I don’t care.

And most other people don’t either. Which is why Amazon is the number one retailer of ereaders and ebooks. I have plenty of amazon ereaders, and plenty of other ereaders.

I don’t buy or read any DRM’d books personally. But I don’t care if others do. Most people just don’t care. They read the book, delete the book after they are done, and move on. Which, IMHO, is way healthier than Lemmy’s obsession with hate and anger about Amazon.

You have every right and freedom to be angry about Amazon. But you aren’t even making a dent in their bottom line. Not even a little one. I have no problems with the company. But I support you choosing not to do business with them if that’s how you wanna live your life. I’ll continue to use then when I want to though.

For the record, when I post news about Amazon, it’s news about their ereaders or their ebooks. Because those products by all vendors are what this community is about. I post plenty of articles about other ereaders as well.

I also have an entire community dedicated to DRM-free books that are not from Amazon: https://lemmy.zip/c/freereads
