I think the faith indigenous communities have built is with the crown and courts. The crown has found it cheaper to access resources by making deals the last decade or so. The courts have been piling precedent after precedent about treaties being deeply constitutional.

The people, I suspect indigenous Canadians are still wary of.

There is a layer of obfuscation at play here. Because there are traditional chiefs and elected chiefs for many given territories. It’s not consistently clear who speaks to the actual interests of the indigenous peoples and who is catering to corporations for personal gain.

A lot of people’s in BC never ceded territory or signed treaties. So when conversations about mines and pipelines occur, it is very difficult for non-indigenous laymen such as myself to know who is the legitimate representatives.

One thing I dont like or trust though is people saying: because there is a fight internally over chiefs versus elections, we should maybe invalidate their voice as a whole. You are not directly saying it, necessarily. But its what impact your message has.

Is there a way to create a class that is open to all people call it perhaps a land steward, they live mostly off the land if possible(I’m not even sure) and follow in the steps of indigenous folk of taking care of the land and balance?
