Voters in Tennessee, including Dolly Parton’s sister Stella Parton, have taken to social media with complaints of malfunctioning voting machines that have defaulted to Republican candidates, sparking rumors of foul play. Local and national outlets across the political spectrum spoke with Tennessee officials about the potential user errors that have contributed to the issue.

The Details: Stella Parton wrote on Facebook, “In Tennessee last week at the Hermitage Library where I voted, I had to go back three times and correct my vote because it kept defaulting to Marsha Blackburn… Don’t let them rig this election.” Marsha Blackburn is the Republican candidate running for governor in Tennessee. The post received over 19.7 thousand reactions at the time of publication and sparked hundreds of comments from people who said they, or people they know, experienced something similar when voting early.

  • Sounds like the touch screens may be too sensitive. I’ve got a device that registers input with my fingers nearly a quarter inch from the screen. Hardware or calibration defect likely.

But, of course they’re gonna blame the users rather than take responsibility for fixing the issue. Wonder what hardware they’re using, and if any other state is using it without problems?

    • The point is to make sure you can’t have an honest audit.

A paper ballot and an optical scanner is a better solution.

Besides it’s Tennessee, they make Alabama look well run and sane. And I lived in Alabama and spent a lot of time in Tennessee.

      • Not necessarily defending TN, but a lot of TN counties do use the paper ballots/scanners. Iirc TN allows counties to pick their methods of voting, but specifically requires the chosen options to include paper in the process for verification by voters and possibility of auditing.
