Gaywallet (they/it) ( @Gaywallet@beehaw.org ) 12•2 years agoWhat benefit would you say having separate sub-communities for specific political viewpoints would bring?
Abrogha ( @Abrogha@beehaw.org ) 4•2 years agoRight now I’m not sure if intense conflicts happen on lemmy but that was a thing in reddit.
But in a way it is a solution to the larger problem that is intolerance.
Gaywallet (they/it) ( @Gaywallet@beehaw.org ) 11•2 years agoIf people are acting this way towards others on this instance, then they aren’t living up to our ethos- they aren’t being nice.
alyaza [they/she] ( @alyaza@beehaw.org ) English11•2 years agounfortunately that sort of granularity isn’t possible with Lemmy, no–at least not yet. i would say we are open to the principle of giving different viewpoints their community if the activity is there, though. in the future, for example, we might give socialism it’s own community because one socialist subreddit might eventually move here, and they’d be a decently sized contingent.
VioletteRei ( @VioletteRei@beehaw.org ) English4•2 years agoIf I understand, the problem is that if we create right now specifics communities like that, the communities will die of inactivity?
alyaza [they/she] ( @alyaza@beehaw.org ) English9•2 years agomore or less, yeah-- there are benefits to letting people create their own communities, but with our size and intent we didn’t think it really made sense and i think that choice has been successful, so we probably won’t revisit it anytime soon. if it’s a dealbreaker for some people, though, that’s fine. we only block one instance so they can pretty easily use another one with community creation enabled, and they’ll still be able to see and interact with the posts here easily
VioletteRei ( @VioletteRei@beehaw.org ) English4•2 years agoAnd anyway, if it grow a lot, you will probably think about enable it
Spacebar ( @Spacebar@lemmy.ml ) English7•2 years agoCan’t you create your own instance and then a community tailored to your own persuasion?
alyaza [they/she] ( @alyaza@beehaw.org ) English8•2 years agothat’s probably above the head of a typical user but yes, someone with technical expertise could also do that while still being able to access most of the network (and Beehaw) via federation
