@hybridhavoc@darkfriend.social Keeping a promise to share my thoughts on wheel of time periodically!

If anyone reading this hasn’t read it, there will be spoilers up to where I am in the books!

According to my audiobook app I am 42% through the great hunt, the second wheel of time book.

So far I am enjoying it a lot more than the eye of the world. Having time with the characters has helped a lot. I often found myself getting annoyed by the 3 main boys in the first book and the decisions they made. However, when the audio of the first book finished, there was an interview with Robert Jordan I listened to. I began to understand kind of the whole point of the books (at least as he said when this was recorded) was that the “chosen ones” really just had 0 interest in being any of that. With that in mind, I began to be less annoyed by the decisions Rand and the others would make.

I do have to say, I got very apprehensive when the concept of parallel universe things got introduced. Where I’m at Rand and the others just got back to their world, so I still don’t know a ton. But with so much media these days having multiverses and parallel universes, my knee jerk reaction was definitely an eye roll. But we’ll see how it plays out. I know the books are beloved, and I’ve really enjoyed them so far, so I’m optimistic.

Excited to keep listening!

  • I finished the Great Hunt a couple weeks ago and absolutely loved it. Enjoyed it way more than Eye of the World. It hooked me in the best way. I have since taken a break just to read something different than hardcore fantasy, but I keep thinking about the third book and I guess I better start it soon!

Also, maybe we should create a Wheel of Time community to continue these discussions?

    • Excited to keep reading!

There could be a new community. Although I think it’s too specific for beehaw. It would probably need to be on another instance. There is the mastadon instance darkfriend.social, although idk if I could just post directly there from beehaw. Still learning this fediverse stuff

  • The Wheel of Time is a great ride, I always love hearing new readers’ thoughts!

The Great Hunt is, maybe weirdly, one of my favorites in the series. Everything is still new and innocent, and the characters (and the reader!) are just discovering the wider world. Glad to hear you’re enjoying the series!

    • I can understand that. There’s still so much I don’t know. Through most of the first book I was very much like, you know it’s good but I didn’t think it was too special. But then things started opening up at the end and I’m pretty hooked now. Things are still so mysterious and that’s the kind of stuff that really gets me to want to continue listening!

  • Glad to hear your enjoying it! I’m “only” on A Crown of Swords, so I still have quite a bit to go. I won’t spoil anything for you, though it is hard to keep track of what happens in which book.

One thing I like about this series is how Jordan handles the chosen one trope. He pretty much makes being a Ta’veren a character trait that anyone can have. Instead of being important because you come from such-and-such bloodline or are like part god or something, its just like some people have this inherent thing about them that makes them more important to the universe than everyone else. It’s a really interesting idea and, who knows, maybe it gets explained more later (or honestly it could have already been explained since so much stuff happens and is explained and revealed I can’t keep track of it all).

I’m really liking the series so far and it’s my dad’s favorite series so I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts as you get further!
