I lived Red and Blue as a kid. I think I played Gold on an emulator back in the day.
I really loved the challenge I had playing Red as a kid. I liked getting through an area with just a few hp left.
I never got hardcore into the newer games and have been so disappointed with how easy and hand holding the newer games have been.
I would like to play a romhack. Can someone make a recommendation for me?

If you’re looking for a fan game instead of a rom hack, try out Infinite Fusion.
I read about that one. The fusing of Pokémon did not really appeal to me. I’d like to use official Pokémon only.
Shin ( @shinnoodles@lemmy.world ) English2•2 years agoI haven’t played too many, but Drayano’s hacks have a reputation for being crazy hard. Maybe the difficulty will be a bit overkill for what you’re looking for, but give one a try and see if it revitalizes the spark you had as a kid.
If that doesn’t work out, I’d recommend trying out a nuzlocke with one of the Gen 1-5 games. (Red and Blue through Black and White.) A nuzlocke is a self-imposed challenge with a few rules. Here’s a link to understand how it works.
There’s also nuzlocke randomizers, those can be stupid fun. I only recommend doing that after getting your feet a bit wet though.
I hope this helps!
Thanks, to be honest, I kinda forgot about the nuzlocke rules. I may jump right into a randomizer.
Shin ( @shinnoodles@lemmy.world ) English2•2 years agoAwesome, have fun! Here’s a link to the randomizer if you don’t already have it.
This tool looks amazing! Can you recommend a good version to randomize? I guess black2 would be good as it is the latest it supports.
Shin ( @shinnoodles@lemmy.world ) English2•2 years agoDepends on what you want. Crystal would be good for nostalgia since it’s the sequel to the generation you played as a kid, Emerald is great because Hoenn is a giant and fun region. Platinum, Heart Gold & Soul Silver, and Black & White + Black & White 2 is the string of games most agree to be the peak of Pokemon as a whole.
The only con imo is that starting with any of the later ones may make it harder to revisit older ones due to dated mechanics, design, and a smaller pool of Pokemon + moves. I recommend hopping around and seeing what you like most.
Thanks for the summary. Maybe I will just start with crystal and move forward as I complete the games 🙏
