Hi all, I’m sure you’ve probably seen that Beehaw (my current home) has decided to defederate from half of Lemmy. I’m actually fine with that, more power to them, but it’s not my personal preference so I’m looking for a new chiller home.
Since attitudes to moderation and when / if you’ll defederate are basically the main thing differentiating servers at the moment, I wanted to ask what your plans are in that regard?
Just trying to avoid setting up all my subscriptions again on a new instance only to get into the exact same situation, I’m sure you understand! :D
This is intended as a “reader” instance. I don’t plan on creating any local communities that would require moderation by me.
Thanks for the reply, I understand you don’t have communities here I’m just looking for a place where I can access the ones I want without risk of suddenly having that access taken away via defederation. I’m not in any dodgy or even any NSFW communities, I swear I’m just a normal person looking for somewhere stable to set up camp 😄
Honestly… you may be better served elsewhere. I spun this up before the massive boom in instances. I think this was about ~90 when created. Also before I had any idea of what the ongoing resource requirements would be.
For now I’m leaving the server as is, but I suspect it will reach a point where the resources available are not enough to continue operating. I’m not planning on spending more to upgrade the VPS any further. (this is not asking for money, just being honest)

I’m grateful for your service, so see this as a suggestion, not a request: It would be nice to get an announcement before it’s too late.
I understand you don’t ask for money, but maybe some users would be happy to donate so operations can continue, if the situation arrives.
I appreciate the sentiment, but I’m just not sure its worth it to anyone. This instance is running on a $6 USD per month Digital Ocean VPS in Singapore. 1 vCPU, 1GB RAM, 25GB disk. The disk is rapidly up.
The lemmy database is currently 2.5GB, with 13GB free disk space after clearing some logs, temporary files etc. Will keep an eye on it to get an idea how long it will last.
